Obama talks about Mitt Romney's lie Etch A Sketch moment re: Auto industry bailout
During a visit to Lansing, Mich., on Tuesday, Romney said the idea of a managed bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler had been his idea at the height of the economic crisis in 2009. "So I'll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry's come back," he said.
Obama has argued that the managed bankruptcy could not have been possible without his decision to authorize a multi-billion dollar infusion of taxpayer cash to keep the companies afloat. Romney opposed federal government aid.
"I don't think anybody takes that seriously," he told Roberts of Romney's claim. "People remember his position, which was, 'Let's let Detroit go bankrupt' and his opposition to government involvement in making sure that GM and Chrysler didn't go under."
"And I - every businessperson and economist out there understands that at the time I had to make the decision, there was no private sector option. Nobody was opening up their wallets to lend money to GM and Chrysler," he said.
I saw the other day that some republican said he didn't like seeing Democrats using *war* as a term, as in *war on women*. Hahah. Yesterday, I saw Republicans saying that Obama is waging a war on marriage. I'd love to see everybody quit using the term *war*. I do think the concerted effort to treat women as second class citizens, including by our Texas District 59 rep Sid Miller, is real policy by the Republican party and another reason I won't vote Republican. They have become extremists who belie the very idea of small government that minds its own business. But maybe that's who they appeal to- a constituency that believes it has the right and duty to tell other people what to do and how to do it.
"Latinos in Maricopa County are frequently stopped, detained, and arrested on the basis of race, color or national origin," the suit said. "In addition, defendants MCSO (Maricopa County Sheriff's Office) and Arpaio pursue a pattern or practice of illegal retaliation against their perceived critics by subjecting them to baseless criminal action, unfounded civil lawsuits or meritless administrative actions."
It also cited the use of the "volunteer posse" - a group of untrained civilians - that carry out Arpaio's anti-Latino policies in a county of 4 million people that is 30 percent Latino.
The Post also detailed incidents in which Romney said “Atta girl,” in class to a closeted gay student, and deliberately held a door closed while an sight-impaired teacher walked into it.
But it is the story involving John Lauber, described as “a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney … walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye” that may cause problems for the former governor. After Romney rounded up some friends, including Matthew Friedmann, who gave his version of the story to the Post, “they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.”
