About Chet Edwards

7 June 2006 at 5:52:39 PM

I'm not crazy about him. Yes, I realize I'm in the heart of the Bible belt, with Baylor University in Waco and Fort Hood nearby. But a Democrat ought to vote democrat issues. I'll hand it to Chet for his stance on veteran's issues; in fact, when the Republicans, including Kay Bailey Hutchison, are out in droves cutting the veteran's budget, he's vocal and outspoken about standing up for them. (Would that the Republicans, who were eager to send them off to war, would be as eager to make sure the wounded were taken care of).

And his stance on separation of church and state is admirable.

Even Republicans in my district voted for him last time because they didn't want Crazy Arlene in office.

Some of his votes, though, have been with the Republicans and against constitutional principles. He voted for DOMA. He voted for the Patriot Act (this after he assured us when he didn't vote for Bernie Sander's amendment that it was only because he hadn't had time to read it.) He voted for the bankruptcy bill, which was a giveway written by the credit industry.

And when we went to hear one of his town hall meetings, he was for the Iraq War, this during the time that plenty of evidence had come out that Bush's war of misadventure was a mistake.

To be fair, I plan to, in the near future, look up his voting record and start going through it, pros and cons. I'd still rather have a Democrat in office than a Republican any day, especially after how the Republicans have screwed over the public when they had free rein in all 3 branches. But overall, I'd enjoy seeing some Democratic competition from a Yellow Dogger in the future.
