'Special Interest' Rick Perry plans on almost DOUBLING the salary of the TxDOT Executive Director he appointed...

12 October 2011 at 8:56:26 PM

With permission from Terri Hall and TURF:

Texas Transportation Commission chairman Ted Houghton has today asked the Governor's office and members of the Legislative Budget Board for permission to pay the agency's new executive director $381,000 a year. State law was changed during the 2011 Legislature to permit the commission to pay the new executive director whatever the consultants' report showed as the private sector median pay. The new pay rate is considered approved, unless the Governor or the Legislative Budget Board object in writing within 30 days.

The median salary for public sector employees with executive-director responsibilities was $185,000, according to the same study. Wilson's predecessor, Amadeo Saenz, made $192,000 per year.

There is no private sector equivalent to running a public highway department whose operations are paid for with money forcibly extracted from taxpayers! Seems we need to pressure this Governor to do the conservative thing and rein-in this increase in salary, especially given our current economic crisis! Public sector salaries have been increasing at a faster rate than private sector salaries. This is even more offensive when you know who was just chosen to head the agency -- a lobbyist and one of Perry's campaign donors. This is Phil Wilson's 6th appointment to a state post by Perry. Wilson also served as one of Perry's designees overseeing his controversial corporate welfare slush funds, the Texas Enterprise Fund and Emerging Technology Fund.
Contact Governor Perry at (800) 252-9600 to register your opinion. Say 'No' to nearly DOUBLING the TxDOT Executive Director's salary!

Good post PStern.  This must be one of those Perry's Dream Jobs Acts where he steals money from the peasants and takes it onto high and gives it to the rich!!

The credit goes to Terri Hall and her watchdog group TURF.  I've been working with Terri mostly on transportation and toll road issues for many years.  Terri continues to do great work for the people of Texas.  Send her your thanks directly:

So, this was just another political ruse by the pro-Perry group to show that the governor is sensitive to the special interest concern.  Another Perry con job hits the streets.
