If parents were rightly upset in Texas over Governor Rick Perry's kiss to Merck by attempting to mandate forced Gardasil shots to 12 year old girls via an executive order. do parents in California feel differently?
Actually, California has gone one worse because there, your child can get a shot without your consent! AB499 At least in Texas, the mandated shot would have been with the knowledge of the parent!
One site recommends calling Gov Brown to tell him to veto that bill. Apparently, as per below, the cost of these shots would be borne by the taxpayers in California.
Who got paid what by Merck in California?
Meanwhile, a look at campaign donations by CalWatchdog found that many members of the California senate and assembly who voted to approve the legislation also received money last year from Merck. This group includes representative Toni Adkins, who introduced the bill and earlier this summer denied that she ever received money from the drugmaker.
Adkins, for instance, received $1,000, according to the Merck corporate and political action committee report for 2010 (read here). She was among 15 members of the assembly who voted in favor of the bill and also received Merck money (see here). Similarly, 10 state senators who voted in favor of the bill this week also received money from the drugmaker (look here).
As CalWatchdog notes, Merck also contributed to some lawmakers who voted against the legislation, but most donations to legislators went to those who supported the bill, which now goes to Governor Jerry Brown. Whether he will turn this into law is unclear, especially since taxpayers will have to cover the cost. But he can expect to hear many of the same complaints about HPV vaccines that have plagued Texas Governor Rick Perry.
Perry, you may recall, four years ago bypassed the Texas legislature and signed an order making Texas the first state to require school-age girls to be vaccinated with the Gardasil HPV vaccine, infuriating conservatives and some parents. By then, his former chief of staff was a Merck lobbyist. Now that Perry is running for president, he has gone on the record to say the controversial move was a mistake (look here).
“I admit to having a difficult time thinking about all the California children who will, in the near future, begin to suffer from the badly mistaken ‘good’ intentions of the legislators who think they know - better than parents - what is good for a child. I know that I, for one, will never be able to accept any Merck drug product or over-the-counter product which can be determined by going to their website,” Camille Giglio writes on the American Life League web site. “This fight isn’t over.”
I notice that Merck is still on the move to try to get their expensive shots mandated by government. Please read at that link what Diane Harper said about Gardasil
Here's a statement from Merck today. See this?
GARDASIL does not eliminate the necessity for women to continue to undergo recommended cervical cancer screening.
That's, as ladies know, a PAP SMEAR.
Remember, as Merck researcher Diane Harper said
As I sat scribbling down Merck’s claims, I wondered why such mass vaccination campaigns were necessary. After all, as Dr. Harper explained, 70% of HPV infections resolve themselves without treatment in one year. After two years, this rate climbs to 90%. Of the remaining 10% of HPV infections, only half coincide with the development of cervical cancer.
Dr. Harper further undercut the case for mass vaccination campaigns in the U.S. when she pointed out that “4 out of 5 women with cervical cancer are in developing countries.” (Harper serves as a consultant to the World Health Organization [WHO] for HPV vaccination in the developing world.) Indeed, she surprised her audience by stating that the incidence of cervical cancer in the U.S. is so low that “if we get the vaccine and continue PAP screening, we will not lower the rate of cervical cancer in the US.”
If this is the case, I thought, then why vaccinate at all? From the murmurs of the doctors in the audience, it was apparent that the same thought had occurred to them.
In the U.S. the cervical cancer rate is 8 per 100,000 women.1 Moreover, it is one of the most treatable harms of cancer. The current death rate from cervical cancer is between 1.6 to 3.7 deaths per 100,000 women.2 The American Cancer Society (ACS) notes that “between 1955 and 1992, the cervical cancer death rate declined by 74%” and adds that “the death rate from cervical cancer continues to decline by nearly 4% each year.”3
At this point, I began to wriggle around in my seat, uncomfortably wondering, is the vaccine really effective? Using data from trials funded by Merck, Dr. Harper cheerfully continued to demolish the case for the vaccine that she was ostensibly there to promote. She informed us that “with the use of Gardasil, there will be no decrease in cervical cancer until at least 70% of the population is vaccinated, and in that case, the decrease will be very minimal. The highest amount of minimal decrease will appear in 60 years.”
It is hard to imagine a less compelling case for Gardasil. First of all, it is highly unlikely that 70% or more of the female population will continue to get routine Gardasil shots and boosters, along with annual PAP smears. And even if it did, according to Dr. Harper, “after 60 years, the vaccination will [only] have prevented 70% of incidences” of cervical cancer.
