Religion Continues to Capture and Dominate the Political News

Enough is Enough!

 by Peter Stern

The news is filled with the religious overtones and affiliations of Texas Governor Rick Perry, GOP Primary Candidate Michelle Bachmann and others. However, the news should NOT focus on the religious aspect of these people in their political run for office. It is melodrama that should NOT be part of politics.

Above all, it emphasizes or highlights why religion must be kept separate from state affairs. Our revolutionary leaders were brilliant in many ways. If the Religious Right gets its way we will all bow down to its desire to get its philosophy, religion, school textbooks, social rulings, etc., as part of our nation's norm.

I am totally AGAINST that effort and so should all of you.

The main problem currently is that the Religious Right does NOT comprise the majority of Americans AND its efforts in politics are against the Constitution as our leaders had intended.

The Right already has the freedom to live and worship, and can practice anything it wants under the Constitution. It can have its own schools, churches and religious and social philosophies. Its members can fit in socially however they want to. They don't want abortions? Fine. The members should not have them.

***However, they cannot and should not be allowed to dictate how other Americans must live or act or fit in with their agendas. If they run for political office, they should keep their religion out of our national business. Currently, Perry and his religious brigade are NOT doing that.

We should all fight this religious affront to the death! Our forefathers would expect us to.

This 'Religion Thing' is just a smokescreen for those who want to use it to gain power and those who acquiesce to those power-mongers because they don't want to face reality and can't bring themselves to vote for anyone who tells them the truth.

I commented before under the name "my.response" but have decided to go ahead and register. As I mentioned before, I typically vote Republican, am conservative, am Christian (devoutly, not just by name, but by daily living and practice).

What I didn't mention before is that I am also a patriot. I have been teased by a friend as being "one of those hyper-patriotic people." I don't just celebrate Independence Day, I also celebrate Constitution Day. Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death" speech can bring me to tears. I love our country, and I believe it's our duty to keep it on track and to not be lazy and turn our heads when someone tries to violate its Constitution or assault the principles upon which we were founded, the principles "for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes" (from The American's Creed).

Pstern, I absolutely love when you say: We should all fight this religious affront to the death! Our forefathers would expect us to. I think a message like that will really hit a nerve with a lot of people out there, especially the "Our forefathers would expect us to."

So many people hardly pay any attention to what's going on. They only get the highlights that the mainstream evening news chooses to show. Some of them might "bee-bop" along thinking, "I'm going to vote for Rick Perry, the charismatic, Christian guy." But maybe if they hear something attention getting like this, especially when it comes from Republicans, they may stop and think. I fully expect a whole lot of fundamentalists to just gleen enough information from the news to know that Perry is a "good Christian," and be led just like the sheep in Animal Farm.

Hopefully though, enough other Christians and Republicans can speak out and hopefully get at least some of their attention, at least enough not to let him get the nomination.

Juanita, I appreciate all that you wrote above and am glad you registered here. We need to communicate to each other and to talk about all this to our family, friends and neighbors.

I also am a member of the Republican Party and have been since 1967, but I do NOT agree with or follow the current platform and philosophies of those in charge of the GOP.

In my opinion, the last truly good GOP President was Dwight D. Eisenhower, who warned us (YouTube) in his Farewell Address  (read the entire speech) of the Industrial-Military Complex and the greed of those in power.  Although Eisenhower tried to warn us all, we did not listen, so now we find ourselve in our current predicament.

I have been writing about our urgent issues for the past 11 years and my articles have been published in Texas and throughout the nation; however, I'm sorry to say that few listened.

The 2-Party political system and Congress have failed Americans.  I still expect big things from the American People when they finally get backed into the corner by our own leaders.  We are almost at that point.  Maybe I'm delusional, but I think we still can get back on-track.  It is going to take ALL OF US to do and it is going to be a lot of work to set things right.  There is still a glimmer of light at the end of this dismal economic, political and social tunnel we now find ourselves in, but it is disappearing from view.

So, again I say, "We should all fight this religious affront to the death! Our forefathers would expect us to."
