Rick Perry and the Cuts to Health Education (which includes sex ed) in Texas

Let's see. Teen pregnancies in Feb 2011 were DOWN in the United States, but UP in Texas.

From a post about Rick Perry putting creationists in charge of the State Board of Education.

Also note that with the Governors' help the state of Texas last week removed Health Education from the required list of Public School courses. Texas with the highest rate of child obesity, and close to the highest rates of teen pregnancies and STDs will no longer require students to learn how best to eat and how best to not get HIV and pregnant.

As they say down here it Texas, we may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer but who needs sharp knives when we all have a .44 magnum in our pocket!  Texas drops health education requirement

One national health education advocate said removing the course requirement is likely to contribute to students making poor choices.

“It runs the gamut, from tobacco use ... substance use and abuse, nutrition and physical activity levels, unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, injuries,” said Susan Woolley, executive director of the Ohio-based American School Health Association. “It covers a wide area and it also covers being informed health consumers, knowing when to use medicines or over-the-counter products, properly using the health care system ... all of these things should and could be covered in a good curriculum somewhere between first grade and high school.”

We ask again. Why teach abstinence training (heck, if it is taught at all) and at the same time try to force Garadsil shots on little girls against their parents wishes?

AUSTIN (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry ordered Friday that schoolgirls in Texas must be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, making Texas the first state to require the shots.

The girls will have to get Merck & Co.'s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.

Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass laws in state legislatures across the country mandating it Gardasil vaccine for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country.

Details of the order were not immediately available, but the governor's office confirmed to The Associated Press that he was signing the order and he would comment Friday afternoon.

Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company's three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, his former chief of staff. His current chief of staff's mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Rep. Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government.
