An Open Letter to Sid Miller TX House District 59 (Somervell)

You have been the one politician in any circumstance or level that returned phone calls, emails, and have regularly come up here to express your opinion. I have said one many occasions both here and to friends that, while I am not Republican, and have never voted for you, I have appreciated your attention to your constituents, ALL your constituents, regardless of party. One of the first conversations I had with you was about the Trans Texas Corridor-you called me from the Lege floor; You were for it and I was against it, and you did vote for it. I still do not agree with taking private property for a toll road to be run by a foreign company and was against Rick Perry as well for it. What I liked was that I could nonetheless have someone that heard an opposing view and mutual respect for opposing views. I have to say, I've called KBH and John Cornyn on issues before. I almost always got a busy signal calling KBH and then would laugh when she said that her constituents felt this way or the other, becaue she wasn't counting ME. And John Cornyn's people never listened to me seriously and let me know that, when I called them. Even Chet Edwards only sent form letters weeks after the fact. So it was refreshing to have a Republican representative that listened, even if what I wanted was not going to happen. All anyone has to do is search on this site to see the many, many times I have experessed my opinion on you, and quite often the reader will find you commenting with your side. I think that treats us both as adults who can disagree without being perjorative.

All that seemed to change this Texas Legislative session. Instead of being a man who represents ALL his constituents and treats them as adults who can make decisions, wise or unwise, for themselves, you decided to go all out on an issue that is offensive to many many women. I'm, of course, speaking about the sonogram bill that you pushed for and then stood behind Rick Perry as he signed. Abortion is legal, but it isn't even the question of putting up roadblocks to make it difficult for women to seek what is legal. It was the fact that you decided to go for something that would require women to have to hear sonograms described, if not viewed. For the first time, I thought that you had no respect for women, and considered that they must be treated as children or second class citizens who cannot make adult decisions. I know of no other instance in which adults, men or women, are treated this way with regard to medical procedures. All of a sudden, i went from being someone living in this district who, despite having a different opinion on many many issues, still felt respected and represented, to being an *out* person by virtue of my sex.

And you have chosen to hitch your wagon, apparently, to Rick Perry. I've thought long and hard this last 2 weeks about what I find so offensive about Rick Perry and The Response. It isn't whether someone can pray as an individual to whoever he wants That's anyone's prerogative with freedom of religion in this country. It *is* that he used his official office as Governor to tout a particular religion; even then not all christians, but excluding catholics and methodists, since some of the endorsers of The Response are rabidly anti-Not-Their-Brand-Of-Christianity. So we have a governor who is willing to exclude constituents in his own state, because they are Jews or Catholics or Mormons or Methodists or Muslims or anything else but the narrow list of *christians* he chooses to represent. In other words, Rick Perry is creating In and Out groups. I don't think a governor should be doing that, he should be representing ALL of us, or at least giving the appearance he is doing so. And you are aligning yourself in the same fashion with him.

I've gotten kind of sick of the partisan politics played where people want to call the Tea party people "tea baggers". It turns me right off in the same way that ridiculous, unthoughtful slights against liberals also turn me off. People who want to do that stop conversation and seem to me to also be wanting to create In and Out groups. I'm just tired of it, and, at least on this site, I generally don't allow comments that don't speak to the issues but only want to use the labels.

I feel kind of bad that you have done this, because I have liked you so well on the basis of your respect for all constituents. Maybe you believe that you need to disenfranchise some in order to win.  I certainly will never vote for Rick Perry or anyone like him that seeks to divide people. I'm an American and I live in the UNITED States of America. I don't get why Republicans are working so hard to be divisive, but I'm telling you that I'm both sorry that you have decided to be that way as well, and letting you know that I will be fighting, IF someone runs against you in whatever race, for the opponent that wants to bring America together, with respect for all, instead of division.
