Rick Perry Wants to Kill Social Security

If You're Unhappy About Obama and Social Security, You'll REALLY be Sad with Rick Perry

25 July 2011 at 11:41:44 AM

Peter Stern posted about Obama's cutting social security about a week ago. I couldn't find any instance in which Obama specifically said that, only something the other day in which Obama said social security checks might be late if this debt celing problem isn't resolved. (Hello! Republicans. Cut it out! ) If you happen to have a valid source where Obama is quoted, please put it here in the comments.

Anyway, Rick Perry is going to run for president after he games the campaign donation system some more.

IF you are upset at the idea that anyone would cut Social Security, then you do NOT want to vote for Rick Perry. He thinks that states should be able to opt out of social security. Why doesn't he just take Texas and secede already? From TPM

Perry says seceding from Social Security is just one of many ways the system could get fixed -- he said that raising the retirement age or privatizing parts of the system are changes he could support. He responded to comparing federal obligations to a perhaps unfortunately chosen article of clothing, considering he was debating the infamous Client 9.

"I think all of those are legitimate options out there, but let the states decide," Perry said. "Don't force us from Washington, DC to say, 'here is the size of tube socks that you're gonna wear down in Texas. Put 'em on.'"

Right. Either NO social security or Get A Wheelchair, Old Man and Keep on Working! Ask Perry how well privatizing the state social services with Accenture worked.

Incidentally here's about his comments about Brazoria County etc opting out of Social Security, fact checked.

The basic difference between the Texas plan and Social Security, Brainard said, is that the Texas plan is a "retirement savings plan that provides benefits based on contributions and investment performance, while Social Security is an insurance plan intended chiefly to prevent stark poverty in old age. Social Security promises a certain level of benefits based on salary and other factors, with a minimum benefit for lower-income workers and a maximum for higher-income workers. Both plans present relative advantages and disadvantages, and an argument could be made for providing elements of both plan types for all working Americans."

And how does Perry's statement fare?

Far as we can tell, the alternate plans are healthy and should remain so. But the Texas plans serve employees also eligible, depending on years of service, for the Austin-based pension plan. Perry's larger point, that Americans stand to benefit from swapping out Social Security for alternate plans, doesn't acknowledge this pre-existing safety net in the Texas counties.

Neither Obama nor anyone else in Congress will openly state anything about cutting Social Security; however, the following link shows a CBS article that mentions Obama would consider altering SS if the GOP considers elimination of various tax cuts.

While I don't believe it, I don't completely rule it out.  With this President and our absurdly confrontational Congress, anything can happen.

At the end of the article it mentions that Nancy Pelosi stated that any changes to SS or Medicare must be considered "on a separate table" meaning that there will not be any deals with the GOP that also relate to other issues.  I don't believe that either.

Basically, it seems like politics as per usual.  Both sides are trying to inflame the issues and get a rise out of voters in order to get their support and 2012 votes.

There's an article today that supports his run for presidency AND yet points out "The Skeletons in Perry's Closet" but it really only touches on so many issues regarding Perry and his politics.  Still, it's interesting...
