Still Pushing Voucher Public Ed Gutting- Taxpayer Savings Grants Program

Um. What About ADA, Sid Miller? Send Miller back to the Charter School His Wife Owns

8 June 2011 at 9:16:43 AM

for some remedial math.

Readers know that we believe Sid Miller's Taxpayer Savings Grant Program is a bid to kill public education in favor of school vouchers. What makes Sid Miller's ploy more egregious is that his wife owns a Texas charter school called Erath Excels. It's unclear to me at this point whether a. Erath Excels, as a charter school, might get a voucher exemption under this plan or b. Erath Excels might just up and call itself a private school in order to GET those bucks. But whatever it is, it stinks for Miller to be doing this. He not only shows his true colors for killing public education but looks to be snarfing up mash at the public taxpayer trough.

So is Miller being disingenous when he says this (Unfair Park)? Or does he truly NOT understand and needs to go sit in the corner with the math tutor?

Last night in Austin, state Rep. Sid Miller laid out a novel solution for Texas's troubled school budget: the Taxpayer Savings Grants Program, a reward of nearly $5,000 for any parents who'll do us all a solid and take their kids out of public school.

Under Miller's plan, parents would get 60 percent of the money their local school district would've spent on their kid to put toward private school tuition instead (more than enough, with diplomas going for $399), while the state keeps the other 40 percent of the money for itself. "It takes students out of the system, leaving the same pile of money for less students," said the Republican from Stephenville.

Um. If you go to the Taxpayer Savings Grant Program, it CLEARLY refutes what Miller says below. Didn't he even READ the public website for this?

10. How will Taxpayer Savings Grants affect schools in my area?

It will impact local schools exactly the same as if a student moved out of the district. The school will no longer receive attendance-based funding for that student (ADA funding), but will still have the local infrastructure funding paid for by bonds, which is $215 per student.

Here's some help! Read up on ADA.  What the heck! That's why schools want to make sure the students are in class or accounted for in attendance EVERY DAY. It's not just because they altruisticly don't want them missing some education, it's because there's MONEY involved. Back to Unfair Park

Leaving aside the fact that the state's pile of money would, in fact, not be the same, Miller acknowledged his bill amounts to a statewide school voucher plan, "an old idea in a new way," he said.

Heh. "Leaving Aside". Right. Someone needs to make Miller address this specifically by making him read the Taxpayer Savings Grant Program, plus make a statement that none of this money would ever go to any schools he or his wife are associated with. Note that he is also apparently find with the teacher cuts that are happening and thinks they should be extended to students, too. Well, why don't we just Keep 'Em All Down On the Farm and let 'em watch PBS all day. Oh, whoops, no PBS or Sesame Street for Republicans, I meant Soap Operas.
