Yep, things have (again!!) at the dump. Prices are up and the available hours cut in half. Recyclables go in the compactor, trash in the big bins, brush and metal are the same. I recommend you get their printout sheet with instructions.
The hardest part for me has been remembering just WHEN its open. Mon: 12-4, Wed: 8-12, Fri & Sat: 8-4, closed Tuesday & Thursday.
Yeah, that's what I want to know also. Seems to me two kitchen-size bags ought to equal one big trash bag.
On a more philosophical note, I think every school class should visit the dump at least once a year, just to make sure each and every child can see what sort of culture (and nightmare) we have created. The aroma alone is to die for.
The reality of the amount of refuse we all contribute is truly frightening. Corporate America certainly doesn't help...why does everything we buy have to be encased in non-recyclable plastic that can hardly be opened without severing an artery?
Going to have to go out there (I guess not today since it's closed-were they losing money? Why did they cut back the hours?) I also want to know about the kitchen bags-does this mean I need to buy twice the bags to repackage the garbage?
Also, what about the free mulch there? Mondays and Tuesdays was the day when you could get a pickup load. Will they still be doing that on Monday afternoons between 12 and 4?
More info today. I was going to get mulch this morning, called first and got the message that the transfer station is only open today from 12 till 4. Left a message, got a call back that I actually CAN get the mulch earlier than that, after, I think 8 or 8:30 but by going to the county maintenance barn a little farther up the road after the transfer station and then having one of the county guys go down the back way into the dump facilities to load 'em up. Next time I do mulch that's what I'll do as I really like being able to get it early in the morning and spread it around before it gets super hot. One time I had mulch in the back of the pickup and it was so hot I considered that the mulch might set on fire and explode the truck! :)
Second question. I also use white tall kitchen can bags. I asked if have to rebag all the trash into 30-33 gallon bags and was told no, that 2 kitchen bags equal one black bag. So 5 bags 5 bucks or 10 bags 5 bucks for the kitchen bags. However, since my kitchen bags hold 13 gal, seems like it should be THREE for each 33 gallon bag, will ask about that when I go today to get the mulch. Otherwise, it seems like it would be less money to just rebag into the larger bag or one would be paying more, right?
I have a question, i think that there will be a lot of people start just going out in the middle of the night and just dumping all the trash on the side of the road. They are so many side roads, the econmy is bad people needed a break at least with trash. But they sure have the money for a new sports venue. So if they are picking up trash on the side of the road in the big picture are they really saving money. Or putting good citizens that could afford $5.00 a truck load butting heads with the law !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Assuming the law had enough man power to patrol all the country roads. I wish they would see the big pictrue. And give people a break.
Suggestion: compost all your leftover food and use the soil to garden with, recycle cans, plastics 1 & 2, paper and cardboard (sorry, our facility does NOT recycle glass for us anymore). This will reduce the amount you have and since you don't have to worry about rotting food in plastic bags, you can reduce your visits to the dump and save money.
Face it, folks, trash disposal is a huge problem and only getting bigger as the population does.
