Because Sid Miller Thinks Women Are Childish And Stupid - The Abortion Sonogram Bill Passes

7 May 2011 at 11:17:09 AM

Let's see. You're a woman, in Texas, who has decided, BECAUSE IT IS LEGAL, to get an abortion. Your REASON for getting an abortion is personal and ought to not be open for discussion with anyone except those you choose. Representative Sid Miller of House District 59 (our district) does not agree. He believes that, even though abortion is legal, you should be forced to have a sonogram 24 hours or more before your abortion, forced to either look at the sonogram or have it described for you by the doctor. UNLESS you decide to tell the doctor that you are pregnant as a result of rape, incest, or a fetal abnormality. In other words, your PRIVATE business now has to be explained to the doctor who will make the decision if you are lying or not. Maybe there needs to be hookups to lie detectors in the room.

How in the world is this massive privacy intrusion going to be enforced? Suppose that you, the woman decided to lie and say you were raped. Does the doctor have to write this down and then turn it into the government? Is there a *health* list being generally compiled for how many sonograms were done for rape victims versus women who were making choices for themselves? Will there be listening or recording devices in the room to make sure that the doctor follows the law? Suppose a woman brings in earplugs or listens to music while the doctor tries to describe the sonogram-will the doctor force her to listen?

I cannot think of any other situation, although maybe there are some, where anyone, male or female, is forced to have a medical procedure in advance of another procedure that is legal. Texas seems to delight in infantlizing women and treating them differently than others who want to follow perfect legal procedures. Florida seems to be right on Texas's heels.

I hope there is some entity waiting in the wings to sue. And I hope that every women who is forced into this demeaning situation at least takes action to the extent of bringing an eye mask and ear plugs. Take THAT Sid Miller and all the Republicans who are so eager for Big Government.

Shame on you, Sid Miller.

Update. The Corpus Christi Caller Times had an excellent editorial on this last week.

Miller said the 24-hour waiting period would reprieve women from "undue pressure or influence from abortion providers or others." Abortion providers, like really good lawyers, aren't big advertisers. They don't have to hard-sell. Women who have made the decision seek them out.

n Which brings us to one of the biggest Orwellian ironies — the bogus concept that women who seek an abortion have made an uninformed decision and therefore need a sonogram to inform them. "This important bill will ensure that every Texas woman seeking an abortion has all the facts about the life she is carrying, and understands the devastating impact of such a life-changing decision," Perry said — as if any woman seeking an abortion hadn't already considered these things.

I have said it before and I'll say it again.  Government has overstepped its bounds in many areas and has no right to interfere into our personal rights and liberties ensured by the U.S. Constitution as put forth by our founding fathers.

Thomas Jefferson stated quite astutely:  "When all government, domestic and foreign, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all powers, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another, and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated."

Today, Federal and State governments are acting more intrusively into our private lives.  Our forefathers would be sadly disappointed in the political power-plays we now see every day at the Federal and State levels.  Our inalienable rights are being questioned and rescinded by our supposed representatives in Washington and at the State level.

Sadly, we American citizens are losing more of our rights and priviledges than ever before.  We are being told what we may and may not do.  Quite simply:  Federal and State governments need to back-off.  We need to live our individual lives individually.  No group or organization, no Federal or State government should be able to tell us what to do with our very individual lives.  This is the exact reason why we broke away from England and King George.  That's why we have a Constitution.  Our representives have forgotten their responsibilities.  They have forgotten that they are supposed to represent American citizens and NOT to determine and then tell us what we must do and how we must live.

The Constitution provides all American citizens with the right to live our own lives the way we want to.  Currently "very lost" legislators at the Federal and State levels are trying to change our constitution, adding amendments via bills to give governments more power over our private lives.  Legislators can't even perform the jobs they were elected to do, so instead they try to dictate what we can and cannot do.

This sonar bill not only sucks, but it tries to take away the rights of all women to choose the right to live their lives as they determine.  It is NOT the right of ANY LEGISLATOR to determine what a woman may or may not do.  Sid Miller is NOT a King, no matter what he believes.  He does NOT have the omnipotent right to tell women what they must do.

Legislators like Sid Miller need to step-back and see that they are over-stepping their constitutionally provided responsibilities.  That's why he is pushing for a new law.  It's not provided in the constitution.   If Miller persists with his resistance to private liberties, then he should leave the legislature and start his own business, where he can be the King that he wants to be.

Sid Miller and others like him are an affront to American Representative Democracy and a major threat to our civil liberties.  I don't respect people who try to take away our constitutional rights and liberties --- and neither should you.

This is about one thing and one thing only: politicians pandering to the extreme right-wing voters of this state. By the way, Mr. Miller, who pays for this? You? And who is going to raise and educate all these unwanted children you are pretending to save? You?

What a disgrace!

It's that, HB and it's a power & control issue.  The wealthy minority usually wants to have power over the poorer majority.  We need to observe their god, their way of life, listen to what they want, and do whatever they say and want, etc., etc.  Our rights go out the window.

I agree that the wealthy elite in this country have a major disconnect from the rest of us but I think when it comes to the 'God' thing and the 'belief' thing, that this is a right-wing extremist point of view unrelated to $. I think many Americans are so afraid of the huge changes occuring in their little worlds that they cling to their ideologies in hopes of salvaging that which makes them feel comfortable, i.e. that they are RIGHT!

It is no secret that the majority of Americans are hurting these days.  There are no jobs, the quality of education continues to deteriorate for the most part, few are paying their fair share in income taxes but are paying more property taxes and other taxes and fees.

Illegal immigrants are gaining in number and are permitted to stay here while being offered services that formerly were only for U.S. citizens.  We're told their children must not suffer because their parents are illegally here.  I'm trying to make some sense out of that, but have a hard time doing so.  Because of lax oversight and enforcement of our perhaps antiquated immigration laws, it became an "us vs. them" mentality.

Obama turned out to be a poor president and his "Obamacare" is a farce, but still is being pushed down our throats.  He is still better than had McCain and Palin taken the office, but we all are hurting from increasing national debt and income tax cuts.  How does a nation pay off huge debt with increasing expenditures and tax cuts.  It makes absolutely no sense, but that's what our "leaders" are doing.

Our troops are scattered all over the globe fighting various battles and training insurgents of various countries.  We are spread thinly and foolishly.  It costs too much of our tax dollars to continue to do this.

As a nation, we are a mess.  Many economists say that the reason we are in trouble financially is because of high gas and oil prices.  We are hurting for many more reasons than that.

Our leaders prefer playing politics instead of dealing with some real issues and resolving them.  So, as long as the American people permit it, our problems will continue.  The GOP and Democrats need to put aside their differences and work to get us all out of the mess we have created.  We need to pay off some debt and to do that we need income from taxes.  The wealthy need to "bite the bullet" and recognize that they will need to pay taxes.  Government and business are destroying the Middle Class, so they had better act quickly on this.  The strong Middle Class used to drive the U.S.  Now, the elite corporate sector, individuals and their bought politicians dictate our direction.

Our nation is changing rapidly.  It may not be for the better, especially for U.S. citizens.
