The CVB is paid by city taxes to do much the same thing.
The Chamber is a private organization. If it wants to do festivals, etc, great! Hold fundraisers, get more members, do things a private organization would do, but don't expect positions to be funded by taxpayer money that ought to go for *projects* that would benefit the community.
Earlier this evening, a public figure approached me, spitting mad. I had created a cartoon to represent a situation I think is not an appropriate use of tax money, and he said that he thought it made him look like a buffoon because of the use of the bowler hat. I told him I certainly did not intend that as the point of the cartoon; I did it as it was a visual way to point up what, to me, is not only a conflict of interest but inappropriate use of taxpayer money. He told me to remove it immediately or face legal action. He also told me he had no problem with any of the information contained in the post, only the picture. I told him I would consider it.
P.S. This is a screen shot of the board of directors as listed on the Glen Rose Chamber of Commerce site as of today Nov 8 2010.
P.S. from 6/25/2013-The Chamber basically ran out of money. I heard a rumour that perhaps Mr Best wants to be head of the CVB. Hope it's baloney.
Love the picture... interested to see how this pans out. Of Course you shouldn't use taxpayer money to fund a private company.... duh. Why don't any of the "leaders" in Glen Rose understand this? It is a simple enough concept.
The city has a well-paid promoter, Mr. Huckabee, and a well-funded CVB, under Mr. Huckabee. Let him do his job and stop squandering our 4B $$$ and our time on this phoney manuvering. This is an insult to our intelligence..
The Chamber is private, and basically is, first, a place for members to have a listing for their services. Secondarily, some chambers create various events to promote the businesses who are members. If a private business, any business, cannot be run successfully, is it up to taxpayers to bail them out? Last night the City of Glen Rose voted to have some guy whose business is an RV/campground listing business, much along the same lines as the chamber, but for Texas campgrounds. Suppose they aren't running their business successfully-should we go give them some money to keep them going? Or how about any other business in Glen Rose that isn't doing quite so well in these economic hard times. Should there be a line at the 4b for a handout for personnel to keep them running?
Last night someone made a comment that I intend to video clip later about businesses going under and said something like the market should decide. That's one reason why CPAC was voted down but then it's okay for another arm of the city to go support a failing business that apparently even members aren't supporting?
