Bush: It's Also Important For Me To Go On With My Life

14 August 2005 at 7:03:06 AM

Ms Sheehan and supporters wait outside Bush's ranch.

PhotoCould Bush be bothered to spend even one small, compassionate moment to talk directly or even privately with Cindy Sheehan? No, he has cowardly sped past in his armored car to attend fundraisers for the Republican party (We're reminded again of who he considers his "base" to be").
PhotoLast night he attended a Little League game in Waco and threw out the pitch.
And found plenty of time to ride his bicycle.

Forget what President Bush told you on the campaign trail. When Mr. Compassionate Conservative is hammering away on Mountain Bike One, there is a noticeable lack of compassion, a decided dearth of conservatism...

Saturday's ride came as anti-war protesters, rallying behind Cindy Sheehan, a California mom whose son Casey died in Iraq, gathered on a road near the Bush ranch. Bush has steadfastly refused Sheehan's request to meet with her.

"Whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president; that's part of the job," Bush said of bike-riding while a mother pleaded to talk with him. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say. But I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life."

Americans want their president in shape and "in a position to make good, crisp decisions," Bush said.

"And part of my being is to be outside exercising. So I'm mindful of what goes on around me. On the other hand, I'm also mindful that I've got a life to live and will do so," he said.

He's wrong, at least in this household. We remember how he has been out of the loop before while riding a bicycle. We want our president to be a thoughtful, visible leader on the Executive Branch side of our three-pronged government, spending his time, not on vacation, or hours every day riding a bike, but thoughtfully attending to important, pressing concerns of this country-and not taking five week vacations, while our soldiers who fight in his misbegotten war of adventure die on a daily basis.
