Heh. Fort Worth Weekly Takes on Glen Rose - Jeff Prince's Article of October 13, 2010

Watch out. Barbara Mitchell used some foul language in this article. You've been warned. Otherwise, this is a terrific article about Kathryn Jones and the Glen Rose Reporter. Enjoy!

Kathryn Jones gets recognized frequently. The tall brunette became managing editor of the county’s oldest newspaper earlier this year, and her picture is printed alongside an opinion column. Opinions get noticed around here, especially when they’re in print and run counter to those of elected officials.

One of her columns cited nepotism in hiring at the city-owned Oakdale Park, a historic playground with a public pool, cabins, and RV spots that hosts an annual bluegrass festival. The city bought the park a year ago, and the city employee in charge had hired his brother-in-law to help with park renovation. His wife gets paid as part of the cleaning crew. And a cousin also worked there. Favoritism is “so blatant it creates the perception that the city government is an employment service for certain families,” Jones wrote.

P.S. Incidentally, a correction about us: To remind, Somervell County Salon, not the Glen Rose Reporter, is the one that looked up Hooters and other restaurant receipts and posted about them.

She also noted that park employees have charged expensive lunches at Hooters and other restaurants in Fort Worth to the taxpayers’ tab.

“This situation at Oakdale Park smells kind of like the shrimp at Hooters — fishy,” Jones wrote.

She gets plenty of feedback while out in the community. Most people tell her to keep up the good work.

“It was something that needed to be brought to the attention of the public,” Starnes told Jones, referring to the column about nepotism and Hooters.

That's exactly how we felt and why we went down to the city, looked up the receipts, etc.

Also, the FW Weekly has this website as salon.org, which appears to be a hair cutting salon whose site is under construction. OUR site is SCSALON.ORG but of course may be found by searching for Somervell County Salon

P.P.S. I have to ask. What did you all think about those comments Mitchell made about Jones?

KUDOS to Salon for digging up the receipts for the restaurant bills, including the notorious one from Hooter's, that got certain city employees in hot water. I told FW Weekly that and I gave credit to Salon in my column about conflicts of interest at Oakdale Park and I'm just sorry that wasn't spotlighted in the story. Thanks for your hard work!

I hold the city of Glen Rose responsible for not following protocol concerning the hiring of Mr. Whitfield. If they had, this painful and devasting chapter would not have occured. This was a time-bomb waiting to happen.

Yes, Mr. Whitfield should not have lied on his application. Yes, Ms. Mitchell's anger as a mother is understandable. But her son did lie on his application for employment and the city did not follow proper protocol. So now this has turned into a very traumatic experience for all.

Everyone involved has to take responsibility for his or her creation of this incident. Ms. Jones, the messenger, did nothing wrong and is not the villain here.
