After Watching the Glen Rose City Administrator Drama for So Long, I Say *Meh*!

30 September 2010 at 12:33:42 PM

I admit that I"m sort of addicted to going to the Glen Rose Town Council meetings. It's comparable to a soap opera where you keep hanging in there, waiting for a plot twist, nothing much happens from show to show, but there's always something interesting. Back in July I called their activity a hamster wheel. Now I'm not even so sure there's that level of activity. Remember how back in February they were going to put out ad for the city administrator, budgeted money for him or her and even had interviews scheduled until Barbara Mitchell unilaterally, outside of council, cancelled the interviews?This was after talking about it in 2009.  But even then, over time, Bob Stricklin gamely hung in there, even after Jonny Martin halved the budget for the position. Bob was dang well going to make sure, especially since that project money for CPAC had been spent (and presumed there would be an administrator to manage the CPAC plans), that SOMEBODY came in, even temporarily, to do city management.

Nope. Even that got voted down the other night. Pam Miller made sure to vote against it, even though, technically, she didn't have to because a tie vote means the resolution fails. So even getting two retired guys temporarily that had experience was not wanted.

I started watching a show the other night called "Hoarders". And during one of the episodes in the first season, I realized that Town Council reminded me of that show. The people on the show are usually very hooked into never getting stuff done, just collecting more and more but not making decisions about cleaning up. When they finally are told that they are going to be evicted from their homes, they are FORCED to start cleaning up the mess, but some of them just can't box up whole loads of stuff, but must examine all the minutae first, every bitty little thing. Thus, what might take 2 days of some determined clearing out with a junk trunk only gets a small percentage of all the crapola. On the one episode I'm thinking of, the mother was taking forever to consider every tiny thing she came across, and the daughter finally said "You do NOT WANT TO CHANGE". I think she was right.

That's what city council reminds me of about the administrator. Instead of saying, Hey, We Need an Administrator, Before the Next Meeting Let's Get a Job Description Ready, Research Other areas about the position and what the salary should be, so we can ACT on it, every meeting was a slow "Well, I guess we need to get a job description" (which they already had and never did get to a *new* description)  or "Well, I'm voting against getting these temps, but maybe we'll look into it in the future". The one time when it came REALLY CLOSE to actually doing the interviews., Mitchell went ahead on her own and cancelled the interviews that the entire city council had voted on... must have been too threatening to think that they would actually have someone come in and look at their junk, and start cleaning it up.

LIke the hoarders who cannot get the job done of cleaning up their house because they want to hang on to what they have, even though it 's a mess, it seems like city council wants to *hoard* its way of doing things, even though it's not good, and will do anything but step up to make needed changes

So, dear reader, what do you think?

You are right about them hanging on, How many items on the agenda just roll over to the next meeting. No one is accountable to clear them up. After they have been published several times they just fade away with no action. What happened to Chris Bryant? He was all for a City Administrator, but when it came time to vote for one, guess what, he had to vote NO.

Why do you say he had to vote NO?  Was there a reason why he had to vote no or is this your thought?

@Craig-I can't speak for Peg Leg, but I read it in a colloquial sense, like "You Just HAD to go out and do that, didn't you?". I doubt that anyone forced Bryant to vote no. Is that how you meant it, Peg Leg? But while I'm on it, dang it all, what in the fool are the city people so SCARED OF that they can't, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE THE MONEY, go get somebody to come administer? It's not like Bryant wants to do it-I have heard him say words to that effect several times. It's not being done by the city supervisor. It really does seem like the city is attempting to keep others away from examining what they're doing and I don't understand why.

No, I didn't mean he HAD to vote no, I meant why did he vote NO.........

Salon and Peg Leg, thanks for clearing that up.  There are so many rumors going around that it is hard to keep up with the truth.  Twist on works change the meaning.  If I were a volunter for the city and could place someone in a temp position to help relieve some worries for the city, I would consider it.

The problem, in my opinion, is the Mayor. Ever since Mitchell single-handedly called off the search for a city administrator, something the council had voted for, the city has been off-focus. I also believe when Mitchell did this, she acted under the influence of the Mayor. What other reason could she have for doing this?

Mr. Byant's tune changed when the 'Moose' issue erupted. It seems he can't separate his personal feeling from his elected responsibility. I also believe the city was very naive about what it would take to run Oakdale. No, Mr. Bryant, Oakdale will not just magically "take care of itself". Are you kidding?

It's up to the council to bring the discussion back to the issues and to make informed decisions, regardless of the Mayor's agenda or anyone else's. You have work to do. We're waiting.

Talking about Barbara Mitchell, I heard that she has resigned, any truth to that?

@glenrosefan. Yes.
