Ruminations of the Easily Amused for Sept 17 2010

It's the WEEKEND again! And it looks to be a great weather. For my part, I'm going to spend a significant amount of time mowing and taking stuff to the dump or thrift shop, as well as doing general cleanup since the weather is cooling off and the days are beginning to get shorter.

Bible literacy quiz-I got 92 percent only because I didn't pick one obvious answer. I was raised as a Southern Baptist and did a lot of Bible reading. My great-grandmother had us memorize all the books of the Bible and I could rattle them off in order. Good question about all this, though. Is it necessary to teach Bible literacy outside of a church or college? There are a lot of word and phrase origins that aren't necesarily obvious or explained in school that have origins in one culture or another. One thing for sure, as the quiz is touting a particular book, The Bible and Its Influence, it would be important to look at the book and read it to be sure it treated the bible as literature.

Speaking of that, why is the Texas State Board of Education involved with religion in textbooks, period?

Group sues over the Naked Airport Screening devices.

Aren't these war crimes violations? Soldiers keeping bones from the dead.

The AP notes that one soldier reportedly kept finger bones, leg bones and a tooth he extracted from corpses; another is said to have kept a skull. Other soldiers are charged with helping cover up the killings, taking pictures of the corpses and lying to investigators about the deaths.

Can someone just put Lindsey Lohan in jail and MAKE her serve out her term.

I remember reading about this last week, when a woman in Washington claimed that a man, in a random attack, threw acid in her face. It was a hoax.

Newspaper in south Texas has an open meetings complaint with the local DA refuses to prosecute. Another example of not having a *next step* to go to.

The Pope's Astronomer

Heh. Here's a less than favorable review of The Town. Ben Affleck is not one of my favorite actors (far from it) but I do like Jon Hamm. This made me laugh.

Other occasions for incredulity include an elaborate heist in Fenway Park. The movie is almost aggressively regional, with establishing shots of the Bunker Hill monument every 15 minutes (what, no closeup of a bowl of chowder?).

Aeeiiiiiiee. 13,000 satellites above us in the skay. THIRTEEN THOUSAND.

Doesn't look good for Bill Zedler- accessed confidential medical records and oh, by the way, for doctors who had contributed significant money to his campaign.
