Seriously?  Everyone is hurting..... sooooo... no more grocery stores, no more gas stations, no more contractors, no more electricians, no more plumbers, no more anything, so that those of us here can make more money!!!!  You made an investment, and sadly the market had a downturn.  I am sure that any new hotel will look at the same numbers he is looking at and if it is such a bad investment,  then naturally they will not build here.  Ridiculous.

As a builder/developer and resident of Somervell County, I agree and disagree with this.  As a builder/developer I would not want to be told that our City wants no more hotels (or whatever type of business they put a moratorium on).  If I have a piece of property to sell or develop, I would not want to discourage someone from buying it because they can not build their project because the city passed a moratorium against it.  The City needs to tread lightly in this area because it could cause come court battles.  As a resident I agree with sometype of moratorium to protect our local business.  It can keep from having an overage of types of business in the community and mantain a healthly level on income to the business.  I would not like to see empty hotels or eating places.  That sends a bad signal to visitors.  The City can not just say no more hotels, eating places, or whatever they do not want.  They have to allow them but they have additional criteria to meet.  The City needs to look at what we have and what we need before making a hasty decision.  It could cost the community greatly.  We need to protect our local business and future business.

Overall, I don't get why so much of Somervell County is run on a handout/corporate welfare/earmark situation. I am not against tax money going to programs that benefit everyone in the community, such as police, roads, post office, etc. I don't want privatized police forces that are accountable to a corporation instead of the community, toll roads run by private companies-sometimes from other countries, that also are there to make a profit and not to benefit every single person that pays taxes to drive on them, etc.

But why does that apply to...

  • Expo Center and Amphitheater- where Somervell County bails out the shortfall month by month and the person operating it has no *floor* of expectations for bookings, etc.
  • The local hospital which is bailed out every month, including the 501a doctors who work for them. I wouldn't be so much against that had they put that huge amount of debt of 14.5 million dollars that Mike Ford pushed before even having a required public hearing about whether public taxdollars whould be going to what was then a private nonprofit.
  • Comanche Peak nuclear power plant expansion which cannot take place without a huge amount of taxpayer funded corporate welfare, and where private investors are warned off from investing, but the taxpayer seems to have a big huge M for *mark* on his head.
  • 4b money going to fund a position, every month, in the Chamber of Commerce, which is a private entity run, at least theoretically, from dues from business members. If 4b money really supposed to be used as a monthly piggy bank for private companies?

And now this? I remember when Billy Huckaby said, several years ago, that there were a bunch of hotels that were going to build here and at least I thought, why so many? I further remember when one of the hotels wanted to get a tax abatement, even though the other hotels had not. When you listen to the video above, you'll hear the Holiday Inn guy sort of complain about how it hurt business when yet another hotel built, not that I blame him. I'll bet the Glen Rose motel would have wanted no more motels built in town so that they cornered the market, who wouldn't?

If you say that there are additional criteria to meet that existing businesses, including the ones that have built in only the last few years, must shoulder, how is that fair? Certainly the CPAC standards will say what has to happen for new businesses, but there definitely shouldn't be a wide disparity between the existing hotels, etc and what the standards will be when approved.

Where's the line drawn, though? Should all the restaurants line up to tell council to make requirements so onorous that no one can come build another dining establishment? If so, then maybe the people who do the contracting/building work need to tell them all that they can't use outside contractors to build, that they can ONLY use local electricians, plumbers, etc. Let's go protectionism all the way and quit letting chains use their own cheapo contractors that come from somewhere else.

I don't want to see emply hotels or eating places either. Maybe the city needs to get someone at the CVB who will really do a lot FOR downtown and have events there, instead of the private chamber having to pick up the slack. Maybe the city needs to FIX Oakdale Park and fire people who are dishonest. Maybe instead of the chamber having "Shop local" events that feature no businesses even from this county they should promote businesses HERE.

I'm saying that I don't want to hear one person in this county expend hot air about government intervention or the glories of the free enterprise system when, if one wants protectionism and handouts, and corporate welfare, the actualites are just the opposite.

We don't have a 'free enterprise' system, here in the county, the city or our country. It's all fixed. Anyone who touts a free enterprise system, in my book, these days, is on the take. I agree with your complaint, salon.
