Hooters Joke Gone Wrong....

Seriously?

We heard that at a certain political party club meeting here in Glen Rose that one of the candidates thought it would be a great joke to say that if he, as an elected official, took a bunch of county employees out ot Hooters to eat, during the course of a business day, he'd pay the bill out of his own pocket. He was, of course, making a play on the scandal, which has still not been publicly addressed by the City of Glen Rose, about how the city employees were paying for Hooters and other restaurant meals from taxpayer money. But that *joke* was certainly off. I mean, he was saying that taking government employees to Hooters would be fine as long as he paid for it out of his own pocket. At the very best, that *joke* is highly insensitive.

A reminder that I, the female who looked up, found the receipt in the city's files and wrote about it, happen to believe that publicly elected people ought to consider that about half of their constitutuents are also female. I did laugh at Barbara Mitchell's comment to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that basically said it was okay for city employees to eat at Hooters on the taxpayer dime because it wasn't topless.

Hooters, regardless of the fact that they market themselves as a family restaurant, has a shtick that revolves around women's breasts. Everyone knows it and it's not about the chicken wings. When a woman chooses to work there, she must sign a sheet that says she recognizes that she may be sexually harrassed. From the Smoking Gun, which posted some of the 2005 employee manual.

'I hereby acknowledge...the work environment is one in which joking and innuendo based on female sex appeal is commonplace.

In February of this year (2010), the CEO of Hooters was Shocked! Shocked! To Find That Gambling Going On To Find that His Dallas Manager Was A Pig (From Mediaite)

And if there is any doubt about HOW Hooters wants to market themselves, look at this.

I wonder if the other women from that club thought those comments were appropriate? I'd like to think that aversion to demeaning and trivializing women is not specific to one political party or another, but maybe I'm wrong.
