Summer Help at The City of Glen Rose-Two Were Children of Regular Employees (Sept 2010)

4 September 2010 at 10:21:04 AM

I've been wondering how many temporary summer employees, to include contract workers, have been employed by the City of Glen Rose in 2010. To that end, I asked for a list of summer workers but they seemed to all be working at Oakdale. I knew that Ryan Bruce, son of Ronald Bruce, the city supervisor, was up at Oakdale, but he wasn't included on that list. I then asked for all temporary workers who worked for the other departments in the city, Streets and Parks and WWTP (water treatment plant). There were 4 of those Ryan Bruce, Tracy Pollard, Daniel Martinez, and Isais De Reza. The first two are not only summer employees but sons of regular city employees.

In this time of economic uncertainty, was an ad placed in the official newspaper of the City of Glen Rose, the Glen Rose Reporter, for those positions? I went down to the Glen Rose Reporter to look through their newspaper archives, and while I found at least two instances of an ad for Oakdale Park summer help, couldn't find one for those other positions. It may be that, unlike the prominent box ad that Oakdale Park has, the ad to ask for summer help for those other departments was smaller and less noticeable. Going to ask about that after the holidays.

Was it that the employment form used for temporary Oakdale Park employees was the same as for the city? No. (Thank you to Kathryn Jones for the 2 forms below which she had gotten through an open records request to the city and where she had found out about Dwain Whitfield's criminal record)

Here's the one Erin Dasher used when she applied for a temp job at the snack bar

and here's Ryan Bruce's app.

I notice on the application that Mr Bruce also worked temporary last summer as well for his father.

I wouldn't actually have any problem with this at all if this were a private or family owned business. I know a number of companies where the fathers and sons all work together, and it's natural for a father who has worked hard creating and building a business to want his children to come into the business and continue his efforts.

But that doesn't apply to the city. The City of Glen Rose is not a private company created for the benefit of those who happen to work there or see the city's taxes as a piggybank to help out their kin. Maybe there was an advert in the paper and I just didn't see it. I still think it looks like favoritism for Mr Bruce to hire his son for apparently two summer seasons in a row. Same for Mr Pollard.

I know of several former Oakdale Park/May Family employees who had worked Oakdale in past summers who were given the run around regarding summer employment at Oakdale this year.  After completing applications and turning them into Mrs. King at Oakdale, they were told that Moose would look them over and contact them.  They were told by city council (Barbara Mitchell)  that Moose would not be interviewing but Billy Huckabee would be hiring for Oakdale.  When Billy Huchabee was contacted...he said Moose would be hiring. So... as one commentor said on a previous site .... unless your mama, grandma, dad, grandpa, or uncle works for the City ... you can forget about getting a job.

Why does this not surprise me.  Does the City know how close they are to a State level investigation for unlawful practices.  If they do not then they are bigger fools than they let on to be.

Your post, 'not related', is important. I think more than anything, it highlights the dysfunction and lack of planning the city is responsible for. They should have jumped at the chance to re-hire previous employees who had experience at Oakdale and knew how to make it work. Thanks for putting this out there.

City, are you listening???

@glenrosefan  I have said that myself on this site that someone needs to contact the Attorney General.  And got alot of negative response.  There is alot of nepotism, and other stuff going on here and if the city is looking for a law suit i believe they are on the verge of getting one.

@silenceisgolden- on negative response. I don't think it was so much negative response for your idea, because I think it's great, it's a question of how the process goes. I did ask the AG's office about this and some other things and the person I talked with said that the complaints go to the county attorney or district attorney first. However, I think if a lot of people went to the AG's office to ask/complain about this, it would get some attention.
