Movie and Television Watching Paradigm Shift (Sept 2010)

It's been at least over 2 years since we got rid of Dish network.  We were spending so much money every month for channels we didn't even watch. I did like being able to see local channels for weather news, but we made our own HD antenna and get those stations for free.   Had read in April about how more and more households were abandoning television for the web. We use the Xbox for televisioin with Windows Media Server on one of our PCs, which brings us in the local television channels, can watch Netflix or other DVDs, Xbox has Zune music and video; some of the offerings for movies are very recent ones that we can watch immediately for a small price. And I saw the other day that Xbox is going to start offering Hulu Premium for television shows, probably in the winter holiday season.

Anyway, the way that I get information or entertainment has completely changed over a few years ago. I used to go run to the television set at X time to watch X show, but I don't have to do that now. Just about every news show that I formerly watched puts online video up so that I can watch it when and if I want (and pick and choose the segments within the shows and skip the ones that I don't want to) on my computer. We have not set up a way to watch streaming internet (ala Youtube, etc) through Xbox yet but I have no doubt it can be done. With Windows Media Server, we can set programs to record and they save on a local computer drive to watch later, sort of a digital PVR.

So the difference is that I'm watching television shows, movies and other content when *I* want to*, and *what* I want to. I'm watching *Six Feet Under*, in the middle of season 3, through Netflix right now, we watched "Hot Tub Time Machine" through Zune the other night, can listen to music and watch music videos through Zune or Last.FM, and tune to a local channel through Windows Media Server in case we want to watch a television show or the news, or watch a recorded television show. And, whereas television watching used to be a situation where you were forced to be at the set at a certain time and everyone had to hush up in case you missed some action or dialogue, that's just not so anymore.

I got to thinking about this again when I read this article about Skype. I myself use Skype to talk to family and friends, including overseas for zero cost. Have a camera and microphone and recently I got my mom on Skype on her Mac. Skype has out a beta right now that lets 9 or 10 people be in a conference call all at the same time, and you can see and hear them all, sort of Hollywood Squares style. I love it! Maybe at some point we will ditch our land lines and be completely digital or cell phone enabled.

What do you do?

I dumped the Dish and went to Cable.  And dumped my DSL with the phone co and went with cable dsl because, it costs us more before we switched and now we pay less and get more channels to watch and a faster DSL.  My husband is very happy because he gets to watch more of Andy, hoss, little joe, adam, ben and sometimes marshal dillion and the rifleman.  As for me, I'm glad the DSL is faster, so I don't have to watch tv with him.  You know it's bad when u walk thru your house whistling the theme song for andy griffith, and the cat chases you because the pitch is too loud.

@silenceisgolden-heh. So many great choices, so many ways to watch Andy Griffith!

They've been talking about putting dsl out where we are just about since we moved here with no joy. We did get skybeam a couple of months ago and it has been great, course there has to be line of sight to the skybeam tower
