Textbooks in Texas for Public School Students? Who Needs Those? TEA Doesn't Think So

2 September 2010 at 5:16:56 PM

Texas doesn't give a hoot about educating children or they wouldn't be cutting English and Science textbooks.

What we tried to do was to protect statewide programs and those that directly impact the classroom," Ratcliffe said. "Unfortunately, some of these cuts will still be noticeable to parents, because they will see their children using older textbooks, and schools will have to pull from other resources to teach the latest information" in affected subjects.

Also on the proposed reduction list are $22 million for teacher merit pay and $35 million for new science labs.

As the article says, this might not happen if the Texas Lege fights back.

Considering how crumby the textbooks are, maybe this is a blessing. I remember about ten years ago perusing a high school American history book here in GR. It had about a page and a half on Vietnam.

Heh. You have a point there. I still think that it would be a great idea, not to get laptops for all the kids but some sturdy lightweight e-readers where the textbooks could be downloaded and updated when mistakes occur (as they do).

That's an excellent solution, salon.

Of course the biggest 'mistake' in the textbooks, in my opinion, is that bunch of looneys who are kidnapping the TSBOE to further their own ideological agenda.

What is really missing is the "teaching" that should be ongoing in the homes.  Too many parents send their children to school as a daycare substitute and expect the school system to raise their children.  To properly teach our children, we as parents should be taking what they are learning and using it as a guide to real "education" that can only come from morals, values and life-experience.  If you don't like what is being taught then teach your children that not all knowledge gained in school is absolute, but sometimes tainted by politics and agendas.  You have to know what they are learning to fill in the gaps or make up the difference.  School should not be their only source of learning.  There will always be mistakes in textbooks as they are compiled by humans.

You're absolutely correct, citizenB. Our primary and most important source of learning is the family unit.

Sorry about that, it would not work.

You are all correct in what you are saying.  But have you stoped to think about what our kids are learning from home.  Some of our kids are learning about how their parents are trying to get by on what they have.  My child is learning the value of money and it's not what you make but what you do with it.  I've have tried to make mine understand that hard work does pay off.  Some of the kids today have not learned that lesson.  Yes education is very important.  We as adult and the parents need to help educate them on things.  mine came home Tuesday telling us in her math class that they were learning how to figure taxes (income tax) out of a pay check and that they were told that The government is the mob and the IRS is the hitmen.  Because the government decided to use the income tax to help pay for a war, years back,  but we still have it today.  And I told her that all that war does is feed our deficit till it gets bigger and bigger  until there's no one who can control it.
