Read in the Paper-Family Favoritism at Glen Rose's Oakdale Park

The opinion this week,  by Kathryn Jones of the Glen Rose Reporter news paper, was about how members of one family are hiring all their kin! She talked about Moose Whitfield, city councilperson Barbara Mitchell's son, who has hired his

  • brother in law, Waylon Adams (brother to his wife)
  • wife Sandra  works for Adams cleaning
  • cousin Zach Hay

and that Mitchell should recuse herself from discussions involving salaries for her SON. Here's my favorite line.

...this situation at Oakdale Park is so blatant that it creates the perception that the city government is an employment service for certain families.

I think she was pretty fair in her description of some others whose parents or other kin work for the city.  Really, in a county and city this small, t would be hard not to bump heads with a lot of people who are kin to others. The point is that council people or others in elected officials need to scrupulously avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest and that isn't happening in this case.

My question is what is Moose Whitfield's job description? Just who is responsible for hiring for the city and were these jobs posted?

THE POSITIONS ARE MAITINENCE ITS NOT LIKE THESE ARE GLAMOROUS POSITONS THAT EVERYONE IS DYING TO GET. AND IN GLEN ROSE PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE IS RELATED . WHY IS THIS SUCH A BIG DEAL..

@aperson. Has nothing to do with *what* the positions are but how those who hold elected office act when matters such as salary (for a son, for example) come up, or being scrupulous about hiring practices (making sure jobs are posted so that everyone can apply), etc.

in response to aperson:   How do you know that there are not people "dying" to get these jobs?  If they are so sub-standard then why did these people want them in the first place?

The only people who would hold the opinion that this isn't "such a big deal" are those that are benefitting from this practice, or those who have their heads in the sand about the current job situation facing many Americans right now.
