Earth's Upper Atmosphere Collapses

18 July 2010 at 10:59:33 PM

An upper layer of Earth's atmosphere recently collapsed in an unexpectedly large contraction, the sheer size of which has scientists scratching their heads, NASA announced Thursday.

The layer of gas – called the thermosphere – is now rebounding again. This type of collapse is not rare, but its magnitude shocked scientists.

"This is the biggest contraction of the thermosphere in at least 43 years," said John Emmert of the Naval Research Lab, lead author of a paper announcing the finding in the June 19 issue of the journal Geophysical Research Letters. "It's a Space Age record."

From The Christian Science Monitor:

This is a great issue and one of interest to me personally.  I only wish you had used a source other than The Christian Monitor.  I have nothing personal against the Monitor, but I think there are other sources more specific to the thermosphere issue, e.g., Discovery:

Thanks for posting this.  More people need to become aware of our environmental issues, and this is another big one.

There's a link in the article: "type of collapse" that takes the reader to Of course anyone who wants more info can find it easily on the net. Please expand on your comment that this is of particular interest to you, pstern. I do agree with you this is of significance.

Only that for the past 10 years I had been "researching" what we humans are doing to our environment, including our atmosphere and I am interested in the direction of changes that are taking place.  This thermosphere issue is one that causes concern for me and should for any human.  It fits right in with the recent oil "gush" in the Gulf, the melting of the icecaps, junk orbiting our universe, rising tides and water levels, the spread of poverty and etc., etc., etc.

I may still opt to write a research paper on the environmental issues, but during the past several years my health and a few other personal issues have put a hold on any significant researching and writing.  Currently I am recovering from back sugery and still am in pain, so my activities are limited trying to regain my health and quality of life.

Thanks, pstern. My research has been more in the form of observation from the ground and less along the scientific line (though nowdays, with the internet, one can research anything). One thing I've learned is there's no doubt that everything we do or do not do, has an impact, no matter how small. Everything and everyone is connected.

I must confess I've been unaware of the 'thermoshpere' (as part of the atmosphere) until now. But my instincts always sense the energies. Let's hear more from you, when you feel like it, about our environmental impact. May you have a speedy, miraculous recovery!
