Two Excellent Editorials- One about Drones Over America, the other on What States Rights Really Mean

6 July 2010 at 5:38:47 PM

I'm always a little surprised when I read an article this good from TEXAS. About using unmanned drones in AMERICA.

In this way, under the guise of keeping Americans safe and controlled, airborne drones will have to be equipped with an assortment of lethal and nonlethal weapons in order to effectuate control of citizens on the ground. The arsenal of nonlethal weapons will likely include Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs), which are used to break up protests or riots by sending a piercing sound into crowds and can cause serious hearing damage; high-intensity strobe lights, which can cause dizziness, disorientation and loss of balance and make it virtually impossible to run away; and tasers, which administer a powerful electric shock.

Since June 2001, over 350 people, including women, children and elderly individuals, have died in the U.S. after being shocked with "non-lethal" tasers. "Imagine how incidents would skyrocket," notes Paul Joseph Watson for, "once the personal element of using a Taser is removed and they are strapped to marauding surveillance drones, eliminating any responsibility for deaths and injuries that occur."

"Also available to police," writes Watson, "will be a drone that can fire tear gas as well as rubber pellets to disperse anyone still living under the delusion that they were born in a democratic country." In fact, the French company Tecknisolar Seni has built a drone armed with a double-barreled 44 mm Flash-Ball gun. The one-kilo Flash-Ball resembles a large caliber handgun and fires so-called non-lethal rounds, including tear gas and rubber impact rounds to bring down a suspect. Despite being labeled a "non-lethal weapon," this, too, is not without its dangers. As David Hambling writes for Wired News, "Like other impact rounds, the Flash-Ball is meant to be aimed at the body—firing from a remote, flying platform is likely to increase the risk of head injury."

and about the Confederacy and states rights.

One stubborn claim in all this holds that the Civil War was essentially about states’ rights, which conveniently ignores the fact that the very argument for states’ rights was the dreadful institution of slavery.

To teach this unbalanced version of history to young and impressionable minds at a summer camp is nothing short of indoctrination. And for adults to embrace this stunted opinion of history is not only offensive but demonstrates an alarming sense of moral authority in condoning it. It also begs one to question what manner of thought distortion perpetuates this type of flawed assertion.

To clarify an essential point, the Civil War was fought primarily for one reason: those for and those against the right of states in the South to continue a system of enslaving black people for the purpose of economic gain. A Pulitzer Prize-winning book titled “The Killer Angels,” written by Michael Shaara, considered by many notable historians to be the foremost authority on what actually drove this war, validates this premise.

" those for and those against the right of states in the South to continue a system of enslaving black people for the purpose of economic gain."

This includes the issue of state's rights, doesn't it? I think this issue was every bit a part of the equation and still is.
