Waiting For The Rain

The sun has gone down and cool breezes are my companions tonight. The one doe who has a fawn, and her baby, ever joyous and vibrant, are around, browsing. Not much for them to salivate over, as the dryness deepens. It seems like Spring lasted only a few weeks this year before suddenly, everything started to turn golden and very dry. Summer came about a month early.

The catastrophe in the Gulf continues. I'm so disturbed and pained by this, I can't listen or watch. I read the headlines on the internet but I try not to see the pictures. I don't need to because I can feel it. I'm devastated, depressed, anxious. Life has changed.

Sometimes I turn to the I Ching, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes, for understanding. Here's what it says tonight: Hexagram #5, Waiting, Nourishment:

" All things have need of nourishment from above, but the gift of food comes in its own time, and for this one must wait. This hexagram shows the clouds in the heavens, giving rain to refresh all that grows...The rain will come in its own time. We cannot make it come; we have to wait for it. Waiting is not mere empty hoping. It has the inner certainty of reaching the goal. Such certainty alone gives that light which leads to success. This leads to the perserverance that brings good fortune and bestows power to cross the great water. One is faced with a danger that has to be overcome. Weakness and impatience can do nothing. Only a strong man can stand up to his fate, for his inner security enables him to endure to the end. This strength shows itself in uncompromising truthfulness. It is only when we have the courage to face things exactly as they are...that a light will develop out of events, by which the path to success may be recognized. This recognition must be followed by resolute and perservering action. For only the man who goes to meet his fate resolutely is equipped to deal with it adequately. Then he will be able to cross the great water...he will be capable of making the necessary decision and of surmounting the danger."

I also can't look at those pictures of the Gulf-at least not on purpose but you can't escape them when you read some articles-that dang photo of the seagull coated in oil and laying on its back is on so many news pages. the difference, to me, is that this is a huge catastrophe that has implications on the ecosystem in a way, for example, that Hurricane Katrina did not. At this point I don't want to hear about the penalties for BP because they haven't even STOPPED the gush yet. It's not an oil spill as Exxon Valdez was, with a finite amount of oil. And it's impossible to think about what type of damage it is doing or has done until the oil STOPS and has made its way around. I read an article yesterday that was pretty horrifying of an AP reporter that decided to dive in and see what's what. He said.

To be honest, I look a little like one of those poor pelicans we've all been seeing for days now. The oil is so thick and sticky, almost like a cake batter. It does not wipe off. You have to scrape it off, in layers until you finally get close to the skin. Then you pour on some Dawn dishwashing soap and scrub. I think to myself: No fish, no bird, no turtle would ever be able to clean this off of themselves.

At that point, I had to stop reading the article. It's just too heartbreaking.

I believe the lessons are only going to become more and more devastating until we get the message. We can't continue like this, that's for sure.
