Broken Promises Fall All Around Us

By Peter Stern

It is hard to imagine that most Americans thought this was “the great change President.” Obama promised all of us a new nation we could be proud of.  Remember the promise of saving “Main Street” from being exploited?  Recall the promise of helping middle class Americans?  Well, where is this changed America?

In 6 months President Obama has broken and/or forgotten most of his promises to the American people, who had the audacity to believe him.  If you want to know where to find Obama, it’s easy --- just follow the trail of his broken promises.

Obama tells us the U.S. economy is healing.  However, what most of the American people see is a wide array of endless debt.  Congress keeps on spending more money that we do not have.  Our debt as a nation is growing significantly.  The American people have no jobs.  Daily living costs have increased dramatically.  Credit card companies are still wreaking havoc with our lives.  Individual debt is increasing.

Remember Obama pointing his finger at the “Drill baby, drill” lobbyists and saying no, we will not drill?  Well, another broken promise is the Gulf of Mexico rig explosion and subsequent oil spill that shortly is going to become the largest spill in U.S. history.

Obama’s promise to save the middle class has vanished and so has our middle class.  He also promised to return our soldiers from Iraq and to use diplomacy to encourage world peace; however, we have dug deeper into the Iraq foxhole, have escalated a major war in Afghanistan and have increased our military influence around the world.  Nothing gained but more broken promises.

Obama promised to save the homes of Americans by providing a major refinancing program at low interest rates and he assured us all that banks will work with homeowners instead of foreclosing on their homes.  However, Bank of America and others agreed to work with homeowners, signed contracts to divert foreclosures and then began foreclosure processes anyway.  When homeowners complained to the federal government about these banks, they were told to file lawsuits against the banks.  There was no protection or enforcement by the government to help homeowners from the bank’s manipulations and home slaughter.

The bottom-line is that Pres. Barack Obama sold Americans a bill of goods.  He went on many television talk shows and rubbed elbows with Hollywood stars, showing he was just another good guy trying to become a star himself, but the truth is that the President is a liar and that he works for the Corporate-Military Complex that has taken over our Congress and directs the future of the U.S.  Unfortunately, we did not heed the words of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower who in his 1961 farewell address warned us to beware of the take-over.  Currently, the U.S. evidently is on course to create a World Order that is directed and supported by Corporations and enforced by the Military.  The American middle class has become an endangered species and will be driven into extinction.  There will be only the significantly wealthy and the tragically poor.  It is the new direction of U.S. growth, a nation of right and left extremists with no balance in sight.  We are pushing Face Book and Twitter on the populace.  Those in charge want to flood the information highways with false and provocative “facts” that prove nothing but create rumor and confusion.  What this does is to clog-up the truth.  How do we wade through all the informational garbage out there and find the truth?  It is getting harder to locate the truth than ever before, even with the information highway at our fingertips.  This is a pre-determined process, to promote confusion and fear.

We have another President in power that has forgotten about the lives of mainstream Americans.  Middle America is still being exploited by the Corporate-Military complex and there is nothing left to do about it.  President Obama wants total amnesty for 40 million illegal immigrants who reside and work in the U.S. because our government does NOT enforce the laws that prohibit American companies from hiring illegal immigrants.  In the process, our government has chosen to forget about the majority of Americans who cannot afford their daily living expenses and who have no voice in the direction of this nation’s growth.  When the corporate sector and Wall Street tell Congress what they want, Congress jumps to complete the task.  When the American people need their Congress to protect them from ongoing corporate oppression, Congress turns its head elsewhere.

There is little hope for the majority of Americans.  Our Constitution no longer protects our civil rights.  The checks and balances no longer are inherent within our government.  Our leadership does the bidding of the Corporate-Military Complex and so, Americans are doomed.  Is there a cure short of a complete revolution?  It’s doubtful.  Will there be a revolution on the grand scale that became the French Revolution when the ruling class became out-of-control and the people revolted?  It is highly doubtful.  Pick up the phones, email the President and Congress, Face Book and Twitter to your heart’s content, but remember the broken promises of a new President and his administration who promised all of us positive change.

Once upon a time we used to be Americans, but now we are American’ts.

Obama also told us the changes we need to make would not be accomplished in one term or two terms but would take many years. I don't support everything our President has done but I am realistic enough to know that a system as toxic and entrenched as ours will not be changed overnight. Get real. The party's over and the only people who can make the changes our country needs are us. It won't happen overnight.

As per my article, Obama has had almost 6 months to initiate positive change.  You need to reread the commentary.  He has flat-out lied to us.  It is too late for the people to do very much.  We are not heard and even if we are there is no one willing to step-out and actually do something,

Obama has lied to us on many issues.  Even if Congress fights him, Obama could veto what Congress wants to do.  He doesn't.

He is willing to increase our expenditures for more warring purposes.  He is letting Congress and Wall Street do whatever they want to.  He has pushed for offshore oil drilling when he pointed fingers at those who wanted to increase drilling.  The Corporate sector still rules Congress and again Obama does little.  He can veto what Congress wants to do.  They can still override the veto, but at least he can try.  He isn't even trying.

It is not a quesiton that there is great corruption in Washington, but when a President promises things and then acts in a different manner, that is lying and breaking promises.

I would recommend you look at this side of the article rather than the resistance given Obama by an ailing system.  He is not pure.  He has lied to us and you need to face it.  So do other Americans.

Also, know that we the people are extremely limited in what we can do.  There is not much room for real action.

I just received an email from a woman named Sandie.  She shared her view with me and I asked her if I could post it on here as a response to my article.  She said okay, if it helps people understand better.  I happen to agree with most of her comments and I told her so.

So, here it is:

I guess since I listen to Wall Street Journal on the way to work and talk radio on the way home I hear this same input again and again. People know this stuff already and some call in and say what they are going to do, others want to know what to do and others just want to hear their voice on the radio.

Today they were talking about the Muslims building that huge building on ground zero. The host, Michael Medvid, said to one caller who thinks we would be discriminating (God forbid we do that) against Muslims if we do not allow this building was  by Michael if the Muslims grow strong here, get elected to office and determine women cannot be seen on the street with a man not related will that be OK? The guy, with his bad accent, was furious and would not answer. We are so out of control and these same conversations are everywhere now, on line, blogs, editorials, articles, TV, magazines, around us as we are in public places and so on and so on and it is overwhelming.

We are told about the Chinese who are marching against the AZ law on immigration when their own country is the worst regarding humanitarianism. But they condemn us and we believe them, well our stupid elected officials in DC side with them and turn against their own country and those who are trying to keep it American (God forbid we have our own country again).

Then we Mexico's President here being honored and his speech appalled by our elected dems for putting down AZ's law when his own country would put us in prison if we were there (and he acknowledged that fact), or deport us and if we are there we have to have the financial means before entering the country for a stay to pay all our own medical or we cannot stay there (these laws from Mexico were read aloud and agreed were factual) and so on and so on. We are overloaded with the problems here and nowhere are we hearing how to dig out, what is going to happen, what we can do and it is like we are drowning in this information of despair and hopelessness. People are getting angry, belligerent and overall believing nothing they hear or read any longer but just search for truths or take the facts in their own hands like the Ku Klux Klan here and in other states.

So after explaining why I feel that these articles are probably good for those who do not realize all this is going on, and if they will read them, they get mad and wonder what to do. For those of us who hear it over and over all day long we are more apt to stay away from reading them and try to find "peace" in our minds for awhile with mindless TV, a book, a bar, friends out to dinner or anything that can help us escape for awhile. And as good as your writing is and as well laid out as the article is, if someone takes the time to read it all at the end we hear we are hopeless and helpless again.

I hope you honestly wanted my truths as I see them and of course you do not have to agree with me. I just know I truly feel this way and have heard others in the break room where we have a huge TV on all the time on one news channel or another that those watching state the same thing. And today when Lindsey Lohen was on the news everyone was disgusted the media would put that on as news, such hopelessness. If I owe you an apology you have it.

First of all, I think your accusation that President Obama is a liar is inaccurate, unproductive and uncalled for. I do not agree with his decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan, but many Americans, particularly the right wing and those who are afraid of Muslims, do. Also, most Americans are unwilling to change their lifestyles to CONSERVE energy and continue to demand more and more of it (why don't we talk more about birth control in this country?). These same Americans insist we plunder all of our resources and our environments for their needs. Fortunately, Obama's administration has withdrawn it support of expanding off-shore drilling, at least temporarily, but how many Americans are willing to accept what that means? Isn't one of their primary agendas to limit our dependence on oil from foreign countries? Of course we could develop alternative sources, like Denmark, but Americans and the system (corporate) won't allow that right now. What are they waiting for?

The sooner each and every one of us is willing to recognize what we have done to contribute to the creation of this mess, the sooner we can mature as a country and begin to reinvent ourselves and our systems. We have to start somewhere. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that starting point isn't going to be at the finish line. Stop whining. Instant gratification just ain't gonna happen. Times are tough and they're going to be tougher, maybe for a long time. One President can't work miracles.

HB, you missed the gist of what I provided.  You do not have to agree with anything that I write; however, Obama is a liar and I have stated why he is a liar.  I agree with you that one man, even a President, alone cannot change Washington.  But he can try harder and he should not break his promises to the American people.  I have mentioned as a few examples which promises he did not keep.

He promised no additional wars.  He lied.  We are at war all over the world.  Again, he did not veto the Congressional bill to spend more tax dollars on the war in Afghanistan.  In fact, he supported the bill and he supports the bill before the House currently that is a supplement to the previous bill, that would increase the tax dollars for the war in Afghanistan.  If that's not a liar, I guess I am wrong, because if he did not want the bill he could have lobbied against it or he could have vetoed both bills.  That's not happening.

It is not harsh.  He lied and is still lying.  He tells us the economy made strides this past month.  It is untrue.  There are more people unemployed last week and the stock market took a dive last week also.  He is not the man he showed himself to be.

Sorry if my comments bother you, but they are true.

I respect your right to your opinion, pstern. I know that things are not good and I do believe each one of us must continue to critique the performance of our President and everything else being tossed at us now. I think that Obama arrived on the scene at a time when we had really lost hope. I know I had. Being angry and frustrated is not some new, exclusive property of these so-called Tea Party people. I've been watching the demise of America for thirty-five years now and wondering when it would start to crash. I knew a long time ago that we were going 90 miles an hour down a one-way street.

I believe our President's real accomplishment is his idealism, a reminder to us of the things this country was founded upon and to encourage us to fight for the change that must happen in order to correct the many injustices that exist in our country. The world looks to us for this but over the last few decades, we have given away our power, we've become spoiled, self-righteous and ignorant of the world.

I believe the change the President speaks of is something that only we can create. i also try, from time to time, to put myself in his shoes. I always imagine that I would do more than he is doing and that I would do a better job of squelching the injustice and corruption. But that is just in my imagination and probably not very realistic. I still support our President, imperfect as he may be.

How can "we" create such change?  It no longer is in our power to do so.  I am glad you had the foresight to know we were crumbling along a tailspin during the past 35 years.  Many of us knew this.  I also have been writing for the past 11 years on various issues and our situtation keeps on getting worse because we are no longer a Democracy.  As I stated, we are a nation run by a Corporate-Military Complex that is far above our ability to control.  We cannot vote it out!  There is no way.  We cannot bear arms and fight it, as our ancestors did, because it is too powerful and an overwhelming force.

So, what do you propose to do aside from being optimistic and idealistic.  There is no reality there.  We people are caught in an enormous tsunami of power & control.  What do you propose to halt the onslaught of the Corporate-Military Complex that is fighting all over the globe in the name of power and profiteering?

Obama is looking for a New World Order, started by the world nations and the Bush administration.  Nothing new there.  Aside from feelings of idealistic hope and fantasy I see no real plan for improvement.  I do see that we are borrowing more from China, India and others.  We are selling our properties and infrastructures to other nations.  The future looks very dreary to me based on these realities.  Soon, we will be renting our American space here and other nations will determine our direction.

I am awaiting your response with more than mild interest.

It will come through a change in consciousness. Anything less will simply produce another variation on the same old theme that mankind has been replaying over and over for centuries. The toxic systems and structures will collapse on their own, as they are already doing. People will be forced to re-examine what is really valuable and will begin to support only that which is sustaining in a positive way. Ideologies will die and power structures will tumble. Everything will have to be redesigned.

It's already happening. I don't know the particulars, of course, or the time frame, but I do believe the future of our existence this time around is completely contingent upon this change in how we think about ourselves, our home planet and all others inhabiting it. What would be the point of staying stuck in the old program and doing it one more time?

Meanwhile, on the mundane level, we have to keep participating in any way we can, even if the choices in the voting booth are dismal.

Hope springs eternal, pstern, and thank God for it. I don't believe in religion but I do believe in the spiritual life and in faith, which is in pretty short supply these days. I also know I can't live my life without at least a shred of these things, hard as they are to connect to sometimes. The proof, as they say, will be in the pudding. God bless you, too, my friend.

My internet was out for a week so I'm chiming in here now. I am more of a cynic and believe people don't change. I think *some* people have their consciousness raised but not most. I was pretty much done with Obama within a few months of his election, when I kept reading about things he was doing that I cared about that were in the same vein as G W Bush. Although I wouldn't go so far as to say that one politician is interchangeable with another, I no longer believe that the political process, at least at the national level, provides choices for change.

I agree with you, Salon, that the political arena couldn't be much worse. However, I never expected Obama to be able to do the things many who voted for him thought he would. I see him as a very moderate, pragmatic person in his political approach (certainly more moderate than I would be). He knows he's stepped into an entrenched mess and my guess is that his agenda is to do what he can with what he has to work with. I find it puzzling that anyone thought things would be 'fixed' by now.

I like our President, I'm delighted he won the election and I plan to continue to be supportive of his efforts, even though I am compelled to write him from time to time to express my frustration or disagreement over various issues.
