Overreaching Congress Forgets the Principles this country founded upon

21 March 2005 at 12:00:00 AM

A supporter of Michael Schiavo, husband of brain-damaged Florida woman Terri Schiavo, hold a placard in front of the Woodside Hospice, where Schiavo is being cared for, in Pinellas Park, Florida, March 21, 2005. U.S. President George W. Bush early on Monday signed emergency legislation aimed at prolonging the life of Schiavo. REUTERSWe haven't paid much attention to the Terri Schiavo up till now, as we have been confident that the process of courts at the state level have dealt fairly and comprehensively with the issues involved. Because we believe in the 3-pronged separation of powers in this country, and that all who have issues can seek redress for grievances through the judicial branch,  it's been a shocker to see how flagrantly Congress has sought out a Supreme Court role for itself. And the justification for stepping over the line into judicial territory? The official line is a respect for the "culture of life", although those who have seen the Republican "talking points" know that Republicans see Terri Schiavo as a political pawn to serve political ends.

We stand with the majority of people in this country who find this interference in ordinary people's lives outrageous, and meddling. We fervently hope that the judge reviewing, again, this case, will stand up for the fundamental constitutional concepts of this country, and not for fundamentalists who ignore those principles in favor of interference into citizen's private lives that are already handled properly at the state court level.
