Why Bother to Vote? Really. Why Bother? Corporations Treated Like People By SCOTUS-can spend all they want

One of my pet peeves is that I believe that money should be, if a factor at all, a minimal one. When a corporation is allowed to trump the average person that might want to contribute to his or her favorite candidate's campaign, we all lose. Why? Because a corporation can take a whole lot more money to flood the media markets with advertising. It's money that, seems to me, would be going to elect the cronies that will keep them in business and unaccountable to the average person. Yes. Person. Real Person.

That's how it is.  Mediaelites says the SC upholds w***** Here's what Justice Stevens, who dissented in the 5-4 opinion, said.

"It is gutting campaign finance laws across the country."

"Today's decision is backwards in many senses. It elevates the majority's agenda over the litigants' submissions, facial attacks over as-applied claims, broad constitutional theories over narrow statutory grounds, individual dissenting opinions over precedential holdings, assertion over tradition, absolutism over empiricism, rhetoric over reality."

I already believe strongly that the national so-called *debates* are an exercise in pandering to the public while not providing any real debate. It's like these shows where the candidates get to regurgitate their political talking points or pretend they're doing another advert, but woe to any candidate that actually debates another candidate by talking directly to them... and for as long as they need. I also remember how Dennis Kucinich got cut out of the MSNBC debate even though he was a qualified candidate.

So you have, on the one hand, the media shaping, many times as a 2 person horse race, who should be voted for. And now, on the other, you have all the commercial time to be taken up by money pouring in for corporations who want to buy the vote.

Shame on the SCOTU.

P.S. When I say why vote, I still plan to vote in local elections. At least there I feel that I have come control and authority over what happens in our community. Obviously, as a person who voted Democrat before and now is aligned with NO party, voting for the national Democratic party candidates was an exercise in futility and none of them at all represent me.

This decision by the Supreme Court strikes me as nothing but perverse.

It's hard not to get discouraged but we must not give in to this. The battle on our plates is so much bigger than Republican vs. Democrats. None of this will be easy. We are fighting to regain our humanity and our power, not just in this country but the entire world. The Darkness is not going to just lie down and die without a fight.

I don't look at this so much as being discouraged, because discouragement isn't really the emotion I'm feeling, as being realistic. We all have time and power to try to affect what we can personally. I believe at this point that national government, of either party, is a runaway train, with the engineers at the helm racing that vehicle down a broken track in search of money and power. I remember during John Kerry's election that the mantra was thrown out about the Supreme Court "This is why elections matter". But John Kerry didn't win, and the judges that are on the SCOTUS currently are ones that actually believe the corporations equate to personhood, that a corporation's free speech rights are being violated by not being able to sink as much money as they want, according, not to the people necessarily that *work* for the corporation, but to the desires of their shareholders, in order to effect the change IT wants.

Both Democratic and Republican parties are failures. In fact, the whole system that locks those who want to see change by funnelling our choices into only two, and then treating the elections like a football game or a horse race, is severaly flawed.

I'll continue to talk about the egregious actions our government takes. But I no longer believe it works. That's realism

I agree completely. Our systems are rotten, obsolete and must be replaced. The question is how and with what?
