Catching up on a number of interesting articles.

Pat Robertson on why God struck down Haiti. He says the country *swore a pact to the Devil"-and thus this is God's punishment for a revot that happened in 1791.

Satan answers back Robertson (letter to the editor)

Dear Pat Robertson, I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people when they are down, so I'm all over that action. But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I'm no welcher. The way you put it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure, in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get something here on earth -- glamour, beauty, talent, wealth, fame, glory, a golden fiddle. Those Haitians have nothing, and I mean nothing. And that was before the earthquake. Haven't you seen "Crossroads"? Or "Damn Yankees"? If I had a thing going with Haiti, there'd be lots of banks, skyscrapers, SUVs, exclusive night clubs, Botox -- that kind of thing. An 80 percent poverty rate is so not my style. Nothing against it -- I'm just saying: Not how I roll. You're doing great work, Pat, and I don't want to clip your wings -- just, come on, you're making me look bad. And not the good kind of bad. Keep blaming God. That's working. But leave me out of it, please. Or we may need to renegotiate your own contract. Best, Satan

Even Southern Baptists think Robertson is a kook.

Mohler points out that Haiti does have an extensive history with voodoo, and that we know God will judge sinners. However,

. . . we have no right to claim that we know why a disaster like the earthquake in Haiti happened at just that place and at just that moment.

We can trace the effects of a drunk driver to a car accident, but we cannot trace the effects of voodoo to an earthquake – at least not so directly.

Why did no earthquake shake Nazi Germany? Why did no tsunami swallow up the killing fields of Cambodia? Why did Hurricane Katrina destroy far more evangelical churches than casinos? Why do so many murderous dictators live to old age while many missionaries die young?

Walt Disney's attitude about religion. Apparently some parents are upset about voodoo and Ouija boards in the movie The Princess and the Frog

Walt Disney always called himself a Christian, but his biographers agree that he was skeptical about organized religion and rarely set foot inside a church. He insisted that any narrow portrayal of Protestant Christianity (or any religion, for that matter) in his animated features was box-office poison, especially in lucrative, overseas markets. More broadly, Walt’s fear was that explicit religiosity might needlessly exclude young viewers, while a watered-down version might at the same time offend the devout. Yet the studio’s founding genius also understood that, from the ancient Greeks to the Brothers Grimm, successful storytellers have needed supernatural intervention agents to resolve plots. So, Walt decided, Disney’s cartoon protagonists would appeal not to Judeo-Christian religion but to magic, which was more palatable around the ticket-buying world. (It’s no coincidence that Disney’s marquee theme park is called The Magic Kingdom.)

The Blessings of the Iphone ceremony in the UK

The congregation at St Lawrence Jewry in the City of London raised their mobiles and iPods above their heads and Canon Parrott raised his voice to the heavens to address the Lord God of all Creation. “May our tongues be gentle, our e-mails be simple and our websites be accessible,” he said.

For Jews and Muslims who fast on their holy days.... a DRUG to help them get rid of headaches!

You can't have your own Christian dogma that teaches one point of view and leaves out other instruction and expect that a university has to accept you. 9th court of appeals. Association of Christian Schools International; Calvary Chapel Christian School vs University of California. The plaintiffs alleged that UC's admission policy, which involved UC's review and approval of high school courses in order to qualify applicants for UC admission, is unconsitutional under the Free Speech, Free Exercise, Establishment, and Equal Protection Clauses.  But NO! "As UC's expert explained, UC's policy is necessary because the *academic study of religion is multidisciplinary in nature' and *privileging one tradition or point of view is considered unacceptable and counter productive in the scholarly study of religion at UC and similar colleges and universities*.

Heh. Man will not shop at a Piggly Wiggly because...

On why the Prop 8 case in California wasn't allowed to be broadcast.

Jesus vs Jeezus - I laugh, but honestly, that pic on the right is what I think my own Southern Baptist religion turned into, and it's not only sad but completely unappealing. When did Jesus become a Roman type God of War?

Jesus makes things so hard on me.

Heh. Panel in the UK asks if Britain should be a Catholic country again.. no Protestants on the panel.

Tampa City Council being asked by 2nd group to cut out the prayers.

Public prayer has been a battlefield for years. A U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1983 affirmed the right of legislative bodies to host prayers before conducting business, but more recent court opinions require that these prayers be nonsectarian. For example, a reference to Jesus, according to one recent decision, violates the First Amendment.

Tampa council members take turns choosing someone, usually a minister or rabbi, to deliver what is supposed to be a nondenominational prayer at their weekly meetings.

Wilson TN schools agree to stop handing out Gideon Bibles.

Appeals court rules that Ten Commandments Can remain in historical document display.

Even though Allah is another name for God, Muslims want it exclusively.
