I offer this pretty much as it was sent to us. As I read this, there seems to be three parts to this. The kids skipped school or at least a particular activity, the tutorial. This made them truant from class and caused Judge Griffin to be involved. Second part has to do with tutorials as required for children to pass the classes. Third part has to do with whether the punishment fit the crime. Would it be better, for example, instead of requiring a student to attend a tutorial to pass a class to let him/her fail and learn lesson by repeating the grade? Agree? Disagree?
I have found out recently that several students at the high school have been punished unjustly for skipping tutorials. I don\'t want to reveal there names cause they are minors. But i know of at least 3 students possibly more. They were sent to court for truancy just because they didn\'t go to tutorials at all or enough. They were in school but the only thing they missed was the tutorials. The court put them on probation. They have to be home by a certain time every day. They have to see a probation officer. And pay the costs for that. They have to go to tutorials every day sometimes in one case morning and afternoon. They are not allowed to go anywhere. I think that is too much punishment for the crime, if you want to call it that. I believe this will cause kids to want to drop out and hate school. I understand that kids should go to tutorials but what happened to the freedom of choice? Maby they would learn there lesson if they had to repeat that class the next year. plus I believe it also punishes the parents. Maby it is not feasible for them to get their kids to school that Earlie. I believe if everyone found out about this then maby they could go to the school board and question this, and make them see it\'s too much!
I asked a few questions to clarify the above.
What were these kids supposed to do in the first place? Was everybody taking the tutorials (to pass TAKS, for example?) Were these makeups because their grades were below a certain point? Which court put them on probation?
They were taking the turtorials to pass the class (not taks). The judge for at least one was judge griffen. I know also one kid was arrested and put in jail for this. not sure how long he had to stay though. These are all 9th graders. Since when is failing against the law?
