Should Texas Schools Give Students Minimum Grades Even If they Should Get Lower Ones?

19 November 2009 at 11:52:51 PM

I've heard of this happening at GRISD, where a student might actually make a failing grade but a minimum grade that is higher is what is given him or her. I think it's an interesting debate. Is it too discouraging to a student to get a failing grade, might he or she not be able to get grades up with other better grades (in other words, the failing grades drags the whole shebang down), and might a school be penalized if they don't have enough passing students?

What I didn't realize is that there is a new Texas state law that took effect this last June that makes it against the law to do mininum grades. And that hasn't set too well with some schools, because they have filed a lawsuit to be able to do it.

Here's what Texas Senator Jane Nelson from Flower Mound says about it.

"It is a sad state of affairs when school districts are willing to go to court for the right to force their teachers to assign fraudulent grades," Nelson said. "When I filed this bill, many were skeptical as to whether these policies even existed in our schools. Now we know the truth — that administrators are substituting their judgment for that of our teachers in the classroom."

What do YOU think?

More on that lawsuit trying to allow for mininum grades-from Jane Nelson.

When school began last fall, the vast majority of districts followed the law, and adopted appropriate grading policies. But a few began looking for a way around the law. They argued that the statute makes no mention of report card grades, so it should apply only to course assignments and tests.

That argument struck me as ridiculous. Report card grades, after all, are cumulative of a student's scores on assignment and tests. Commissioner Scott agreed, and notified districts they should comply.

Unfortunately, a few districts decided that they would rather use taxpayer dollars in a court challenge instead of on classroom instruction. A state district judge in Travis County will hear evidence in the lawsuit this summer.
