Ruminations of the Easily Amused for November 4 2009

4 November 2009 at 12:28:13 PM

Continue to be really busy lately. I've also been wedging in a daily walk using the IMAP website which lets you track how much you're walking and do challenges. Haven't, heh, done any challenges, but have logged in about 3 miles daily for the last 3 days. Also have been taking the puppy, who is doing pretty well but needs to figure out not to be scared of passing cars. I'd appreciate any comments on how you trained your dog to be oblivious to distractions (I have him on a leash). We also passed a dog today and I thought about letting both dogs sniff each other but then considered I might end up in the middle of a male dog fight!

Here's a law that needs to get changed.

Texas Teachers Merit Pay hasn't boosted student performance- DMN

But teacher groups remain skeptical of the new plan, particularly its heavy reliance on student test scores – also a key feature of the TEEG plan.

"The problem is that these tests aren't designed for this purpose," said Jennifer Canaday of the Association of Texas Professional Educators. "You can't take a snapshot of students' performance on one day and extrapolate from that whether their teacher is highly effective over the entire school year."

This is evil. bio-science used against enemies and also jacking with soldiers.

The Air Force is looking to harness advances in bio-science so they can “degrade enemy performance and artificially overwhelm enemy cognitive abilities.” It’s all part of a $49 million dollar bio-research effort unveiled last month by the Air Force Research Lab’s “Human Effectiveness Directorate,” and it’s the latest in a series of out-there military ideas to mess with adversaries’ heads.

It's too late (probably) for things like cauliflower or brocoli but you can plant spinach, kale, mustard, turnips, lettuce (the leaf variety, not head lettuce), radishes, beets, carrotts and the many different kinds of chinese greens (brassicas). Gernination and growth may be slower as the temps fall but these plants can go into March or April, if it doesn't get too hot, too soon.
