TEA Thinks Two Open Periods at GRISD High School (Glen Rose ISD) is Not Standard

22 October 2009 at 6:10:11 PM

A little background.

I have talked to a school board representative about this, and, although it is not school board policy, and although it only affects the high school, he was not concerned. I got to wondering if perhaps having two periods off for high school teachers is the norm in Texas, so called up TEA. I asked, in the general questions area,  about whether having an extra period of *off* time for teachers, besides the conference time that is listed as a policy, is standard procedure. I was told that if a school board can decide if they want to bring this up at a board meeting, before the public, and pass extra time. In our discussion, I told the representative that the school board has made no such policy and that it is apparently the decision, not policy, of an administrator. The representative told me she had never heard of any school in Texas giving two periods off on a daily basis. I said, do you know of even ONE other school district that is going this besides Glen Rose ISD? She said no.

I teach Jr. High and have two planning periods each day. I have 5 preps--4 grade levels of one subject and one grade level for another subject so I would hardly describe them as "off" periods. At our district, it was not a board decision or policy, simply the schedule as prepared by the principal. TEA might not be the best source of information on this subject as I know of other districts that give their teachers two planning periods.

Wonder if you would mind mentioning the other districts you know that do, even if you are reluctant to mention your own?

I don't mind--but before I do, I need to verify--this was a change that was implemented last school year--I need to make sure the districts I had in mind still do this.  Just out of curiosity, what is your problem with GRHS having two planning periods--do you not think the teachers need that much time during the school day or is it actually a problem you have with administration?  Sorry if I sound defensive, but I get tired of hearing that teachers only work 9 months out of the year and their day is 8-3.  That is so not true.  Like so many other things in life,  no one truly knows what another situation is like until they've been there!

@anonymous. The issue isn't whether I think teachers deserve an extra period. I am all for public schools, I don't think teachers make near enough for what they do, etc. However, I think decisions about off periods ought to be made by school boards with the input of the public. Why? Conference periods are clearly spelled out in the manual (the first of off periods). If there are too mahy children in a class or a class is not available because of an arbitrary extra period that an administrator takes it upon him or her self to give, the public should clearly know about it. Taxpayers also, in general, should know about this, since our taxes pay for school days. If a board decided that an extra hour was appropriate, in airing this at a board meeting, and it became school policy, I have no problem with that.
