Oh. Chet Edwards CAN be Recorded Now at the Cleburne (Johnson Co) TX Regional Meeting on Sept 4 09

2 September 2009 at 3:10:40 PM

To remind, I was appalled when Chet Edwards issued a directive that nobody was going to be able to record his regional town hall meetings. (Except for one pre-arranged station that he had stream the meeting in B-CS). That's changed, according to the Cleburne Times-Review.

An Aug. 21 release from Edwards’ office stated that no printed signs or electronic or recording devices would be permitted inside the auditorium.

A Monday release altered that policy.

“Those who attend the town hall are respectfully asked not to bring printed signs or recording devices into the venue to foster a productive discussion, but none of the items will be banned,” according to the release.

Um. It is NOT being disrespectful to bring a camera to record Edwards. Good to see that he finally agrees that his meetings should be open and transparent.

Update because I want to talk about this a little more. It is completely absurd to say that the act of recording someone in public office that we pay is somehow disrespectful. Someone might be disrespectful WHILE recording. Someone might be disrespectul AFTER recording if they make videos to lampoon them, such as what The Daily Show does. But otherwise, you might as well say that Cspan putting cameras on to record House representatives is disrespectful. It's certainly not disruptive. I record quite a few meetings myself at a local level and I attempt to be the mouse in the corner, quietly out of the way and unobtrusive. I also do not deliberately create clips that make fun of people, although there are some times when the clips kind of speak for themselves.

Did Mr Edwards consider it disrespectful when he invited the B-CS station to stream his regional town hall meeting there? Or was it because, oh, that was a controlled and approved way to record the meetings as opposed to the public rightly being able to do so in an public meeting.

I'm telling you now that it is not offensive for me to want to take a camera into the regional town hall meeting and it's absurd for Edwards to imply that anyone that does that is somehow impolite.
