Obama Is NOT Trying to Kill Your Grandma

5 August 2009 at 1:37:29 PM

I didn't realize until today that Obama Killing Grandma is a Republican talking point. Last week a friend and I were in Weatherford at the trade days and a very nice woman and I were talking about health care reform. I have to admit that I am overwhelmed when I start to think about it, except that I believe that the insurance companies and Big Pharm don't want to see reasonable health care because they make good money off it. Then someone today has been commenting about his grandma, but I'm sure now, after seeing it on the internet, that that is a rhetorical device. A Faulty, Fear-Mongering rhetorical device.

Read this.

people are not entitled to call a proposal to reimburse doctors for advising patients on end-of-life options a mandate that Grandma be killed.

As I read this, the bill, which does not come from Obama but from House Democrats, has a section that would give Medicare reiumbursement if a doctor meets with seniors every 5 years about how to end their life. Doesn't REQUIRE seniors to do that. Just gives some moolah back to the doctor if that happens.

Now, I am ALL FOR Living Wills. I'm not sure if my father had a living will before he died recently, will have to ask my mom when the family gathers later this year for a memorial. But I do know that he wanted to die with dignity and the doctor would not let him get his feeding tube removed and go home. Maybe he should have stayed on life support forever and gone through several more exploratory surgeries, thus racking up needless bills for his widow, my mother. IF the provision, as it seems to be, is about letting seniors know about their options (on a voluntary basis), as the author says above, that's not euthanizing people.

P.S. Here's Slog on that. -references TNR article.

The Republican letter claims, absent supporting evidence, that such counseling encourages mercy-killing and physician-assisted suicide. For the record, I suspect the opposite is true. Surveys indicate that fear of unmanaged pain and the fear of losing control provide powerful motives for suicide among patients with serious illnesses. Proper counseling and advance directives could reassure millions of patients and their families. AARP's John Rother gets this exactly right, when he notes:

This measure would not only help people make the best decisions for themselves, but also better ensure that their wishes are followed. To suggest otherwise is a gross, and even cruel, distortion-especially for any family that has been forced to make the difficult decisions on care for loved ones approaching the end of their lives.

A Living  Will is a very standard document that every adult should have in their important papers. Encouraging physicians to discuss this ultimate reality that we all face is necessary because too many physicians and too many patients simply fail to deal with this. Then when Grandma crashes because it is her time and she is trying to die with dignity and grace, if there is no living will and her loved ones are ignorant, she will be hauled in via ambulance, coded, intubated, shot full of drugs and tortured for days, maybe weeks until she actually does die anyway. Take responsibility for yourselves, friends. And for those who buy into the ridiculous claims and lies about health care reform, well, I'm afraid they still haven't discovered any cure for terminal ignorance.
