Checking Out Google Voice

After I read about the FCC challenging Apple (and maybe AT&T''s) decision not to have an iphone app for Google voice, AND coincidentally calling up a friend who has it and getting to announce my voice as a caller first to her, I decided I'd like to check into it. I signed up and got an okay today.

First let me say that some years back we had the BEST PHONE that came from Microsoft. It was tied into computer voice mail, you could block numbers on it, you could have different mailboxes, and you could require an audio announcement from callers you didn't know. Unfortunately, it only worked with an older version of Windows (I can't remember which one now, maybe Windows 95 or 98?) and when we upgraded the OS, the phone no longer worked correctly. and there was not a software upgrade for it. I loved that phone and no phone we've gotten since has matched how great it was.

Maybe this will be. Google apparently bought Grand Central software.

What I don't know is how customizable it is. Like, both hub and I have calls coming in on the house phone. If he got one number and I get one number, that would be two different numbers calling into to one phone. So my first question I'm going to be looking to answer is, do you know when you get a ring on a phone WHO it is for or is there an assumption it's only for one person? Seems like it would have to be for multiple people to use, and there must be a way to route it to whoever is the appropriate mailbox.  I also would need it to work with my iphone-especially important since out in the rurals the signal sometimes is intermittent and even drops out when you round certain curves on the road!

If you're using it, I'd love to hear your comments about what you think about it. Do you have a several number to one house phone situation? With multiple people in the house using, say, the land line? How does it work for you?
