*Tough Cage* and Puppy Update

23 July 2009 at 1:48:33 PM

Readers know that I am absolutely thrilled with the lab-husky mix puppy I got within the last month from the Glen Rose Animal Shelter. He still is learinng about biting, but he's gotten much much better and I'm enjoying him... a lot! Last night we were watching a movie and he fell asleep on my lap. I got to thinking "This is going to be a LAB" and decided i need to cut that out, so I laid him on a big fluffy dog bed at the foot of the couch where he slept for at least an hour.

Although I have him, at night and different times in the day, in a concrete floored breezeway that we call the dog room, it's not conducive to helping him see that he needs to bark to go out. When I'm awake it's not a problem because I can get him out regularly and watch for him when he wants to go, but at night he gets up and walks over to the other side of the dog room and pees.

One of the last beloved dogs we had was a husky-german shepherd mix. She was a wonderful dog but she had a major problem with thunderstorms. She could hear them approaching and would start pacing the room and panting. Worse, she would try to find some place to crawl into to hide, which was not good for the furniture. The vet gave me knock-out pills for her, which was an okay solution, except that, as I said, she knew about the storm before we did and the pills took a bit to kick in. Plus, then, she'd be woozy afterwards and I didn't much care for doing that.

I thought I had the solution, finally, when I saw a big ruff and tough cage in an online pet store directory. The kennel cage was the toughest one they sold and sure seemed like it would solve the problem. I thought maybe I'd put her in there and put some blanket over it and she would at least be contained and maybe not scared because she'd be in a dark space. Nope. She tried her best to get out and she actually bent the metal. At one point I took the cage to Granbury to a welding place to ask them to make a sliding bolt lock on the front so that she couldn't pry the door open. There are a few metal pieces right now that are bent out of shape and I'm considering whether I shoudl take the door off and get the hammer and knock them flat.

Anyway, that dog passed away from old age a couple of years ago and the cage went into the garage. I pulled it back out into the dog room about an hour ago and, after I fix the metal pieces (which might require me to try to solder them to the door, IF that will work) I plan to put puppy in the kennel when I go to bed. I think that the openness of the kennel will keep him from yowling and I'm planning to put some comfy bedding and a few toys in with him. Cross your fingers that he will wake me up in the middle of the night when he has to go instead of doing it in the kennel!
