THE FOURTH OF JULY
FREEDOM

The flurry of fireworks in the neighborhood has finally died down tonight. Since three of the four properties participating are close enough to accidentally set my place on fire, I'm glad it's quiet now. The moon is bright, just a whisper of breeze and the temp has dropped to a chilly 89.   Visions of past fourths of July run through my memory.

The one I always seem to think of is that time my father took us kids out to Eagle Mountain Lake to set off fireworks. Since I was only maybe five and my brothers a good bit older, they were the main participants in the activity and I was just an observer. What I remember most, however, was not the fireworks but the fact that I had forgotten to wear any shoes and all of a sudden found myself standing in a bed of red ants! As the ants frantically started running up my legs and stinging the daylight out of me, my father finally noticed something was wrong and did his best to rescue me from their torture. It was too late, of course, and all I could do to salvage my dignity was tough it out and pretend I wasn't miserable.

Freedom. I have been privileged to live a life of more freedom than most people in all of history.  But instead of wanting to celebrate with noise and light shows, I feel very sober when I think about my freedom and what we Americans have. I know now that freedom without responsibility is only license to indulge. This isn't real freedom, it's the illusion of it. And just like I had to live a good number of years to reach this level of understanding, I think our country is going through its maturation stages, too. One thing I do know tonight: when we truly embrace the responsibility that goes with our freedoms, we will have matured to the point where we can really do some good in this world. We're a very young country and have a lot to learn. I'm really looking forward to it.
