I Just have to say it-I AM SO HOT TODAY! (A summer without A/C)

We are running a grand experiment this summer which may come to a short end. I've mentioned before that I pretty much stopped washing in hot water and only use the dryer on days when it's raining or clothing cannot otherwise dry effectively on a clothesline. And it's paid off as our electricity bill has gone down significantly.

So we're trying going without A/C this summer. Our house has lots of windows on all sides, so it's entirely possible to get a breeze (as long as there is one) from any angle. We also have ceiling fans in most of the rooms as well as a couple of big round fans that can really pour out the air. My secret dream as well is to get a whole house fan put into the ceiling upstairs where the hot air can be sucked out ot the house and released through the attic. But that mght have to wait till next year.

This is the first day that it's been hot and muggy and one MUST sit in a room that has a fan going. But you know, it's pretty great in those rooms-the air is cooled coming from outside and it's such a contrast treat to feel the breeze. And, at night, when the air cools down, it's wonderful to smell the night air.

What I don't know at this point is whether it will be a tremendous savings by using the windows and fans versus a/c but I like the idea of enjoying the breezes from outside.. as long as I can.

There is a huge difference in energy usage between A/C and fans. First of all, an attic fan is great and not that expensive. I have also had a spray-on radiant barrier installed in my attic and that helps. Secondly, when the outdoor ambient temp begins to warm in the late morning, close up the house, pull the shades on the windows. (Of course, window technology being what it is today, all it takes is $ to improve on this).

Also, peel down to your underwear (only the coons will see you) and when it gets really hot, get under the hose from time to time. A wet T-shirt will keep you cool for awhile. I slow down in the afternoons (great time to read, journal or just sit under the big oak and watch the birds at the bird baths.) One just has to go with it, not against it. Good for you and yours, Salon!!
