Voting Day. Did you vote in local elections? I went down to city hall and voted for school board elections. About 30 people have voted today, don't know the early SB vote. I don't live in the city so didn't vote for city candidates.
The gospel of "safety from infections" has taken on a new meaning at Rockford Memorial Hospital. The hospital is removing all bibles and phone books from patient rooms. The decision comes after two years of study. The desire is to prevent secondary infections from numerous people touching these books. This permanent policy move is coincidental to the H1N1-swine flu concerns. RMH does say bibles will be available upon request, and anyone who gets a bible will then take it home when they leave.
The other day someone asked me if I was equally about writing not-so-favorable stuff about Chet Edwards. I said, yes, I call 'em like I see 'em. He said that Chet Edwards voted for pedophila. I had NO idea what the Republican telling me this was talking about but that it related in some way to the Hate Crimes bill. Now, I don't agree with Chet Edwards on a number of issues, particularly where he has voted with Republicans, but to suggest or even outright say that because he voted for this bill, that makes him, the son-in-law of a preacher, an advocate of pedophilia is not only laughable but downright insulting. I started to look up where the fool this all came from the other day and noticed that Bill O'Reilly and WorldNutDaily were on it, so that told me that whatever the issue, it was a cooked up Fox News type farce. Anyway, here's what it looks like to me. Some Republicans (although there are plenty of closet homosexuals) don't want to see those who harrass homosexuals get prosecuted for hate crimes. I personally can't see where that would interfere with someone's religious beliefs-if one truly believes that homosexuality is wrong, keep on believing that, but just don't run down the street with a gun and kill or haze a homosexual. (I'm reminded of the people who are against abortion but think it's fine to be a terorrist and kill patients or firebomb a clinic.) So, anyway, despite the fact that the Hate Crimes bill specifically and narrowly is for protecting people regardless of their sexual orientation AND that definition is specific, "consensual homosexuality or heterosexualtiy", some representative wanted to put in language that would make it appear that homosexualty is a brother to pedophilia. This despite the fact that pedophilia and other deviations cannot be included in the meaning of sexual orientation and are against the law. Seems to me this whole tempest-in-a-teapot is simply to allow Christian bigots, who are certainly entitled to their own beliefs, to get of the hook if they actively take action against homosexuals. And that's wrong. It's one thing to be against homosexualty as a religious belief and quite another to, as in the case of Matthew Sheperd, haze and kill someone for it.
