Lobbyists Pushing for Gambling While 'Do-Nothing' Legislature Does Nothing

14 April 2009 at 9:45:35 AM

Is it any surprise that Texas lawmakers do NOT want to act on new pro-gambling legislation?   No, not really.

Does such a bill make sense?  Maybe, considering those who like to gamble do in other states where it is legally, or do so here in Texas anyway illegally and/or with a bookie.  The State loses a lot of potential gambling and related revenue because of this.

The religious right still has a lot of clout here in Texas, so many legislators do NOT want to lose religious voters for an issue that has been bounced around in the House and Senate for the past decade without any previous approval.  Even Gov. Perry once pushed for gambling legislation and received a hand-slap for his efforts. Since then the governor has been quiet on the gambling issue.

It should come as no surprise to anyone, in a legislature UNABLE to resolve other more significant and urgent issues facing Texans and their families, that lawmakers would not approve a more potentially risky and politically volatile decision-making on gambling.

Lawmakers continue to provide a lackluster disservice for the people of Texas who, due to a "do-nothing" legislature, still must endure and suffer from no relief of:

  • Sky-high property taxes, causing in part the increase of home foreclosure and a poor housing market
  • Deregulation of higher education, which has become unaffordable for many Texas children
  • Deregulation of the electric industry, which has increased dramatically the monthly cost of electricity
  • Diversion of State financial responsibilities onto county and city government, causing further financial burdens on local government
  • Inability State to find alternate and more fair sources of financing public education
  • Pushing a toll road agenda for the past 7 years without real oversight of TxDOT, its operations and its spending priorities
  • Enabling lax insurance legislation that 5 years ago doubled home insurance premiums, which are the highest in the nation.

With such lackluster lawmakers sitting in the House and Senate it is small wonder that Texans remain without relief or resolutions on these and other urgent issues.  It is more important than ever that Texans contact their representatives to demand resolutions for our urgent issues.

Furthermore, if lawmakers continue to refuse to do the jobs they were hired to do for the people of Texas, they should step-down from their positions and let someone else do their job properly for the community good.

Been going on for years!  That's why Perry wanted it 5 years ago.  He's pretty quiet now about it.
