Electricity: Another Galaxy

PEC needs some credible 'juice'

8 April 2009 at 3:39:37 AM

Pedernales Electric Cooperative has left a bad taste in the mouths of it members and has burned a hole in their wallets.

While we hear that new leadership is repaving the road PEC has traveled on, we all know that "talk is cheap".

Unfortunately, there still are too many mirrors and too much smoke hovering around PEC.

The members have been ripped-off in the millions by former CEO and Board members. Maybe those former PEC “leaders” should be forced to provide restitution directly to coop members.

Maybe members should receive months of free electricity to make up for the incredible monetary theft and damage perpetrated by those former leaders, which also encouraged the current trust issues of PEC management and direction.

We have a long way to go. Members still are getting ripped-off every month with the high cost of electricity provided by PEC.

Recently we were told by PEC that it had entered contracts to provide “cheaper” electricity to its members starting in 2010.

What about right now? How is PEC helping members with affordable costs of electricity?

Apparently, we need some more regulation in the electric industry, especially where cooperatives are concerned, since these “march to the tune of a different drummer” than the rest of the industry. However, state lawmakers continue to keep a “hands-off” status re: PEC and other electric cooperatives.

Bottom-line is that electricity should be cheaper for most Texans and PEC in particular has a long way to go in making amends to its members before it can shake-off its long-time image of “rip-off artist”.

While lawmakers under public pressure are moving towards making electric coops more open to the public, the industry continues to fight the measure.

"Actions speak louder than words."

Obviously, there is much to hide if coops are being so protective of information, meetings and paper flow.

The same was true of TxDOT fighting against opening toll contracts to legislative public scrutiny. We saw what happened there. It is a signal of corruption.

At least a few legislators are making an effort to deal with this issue.
