Did the Attempt at Banning a Book in Cleburne (TX) Fail?

24 March 2009 at 12:02:20 PM

I was reading last month about an effort by some overly zealous parents to get rid of a book from the Cleburne High School reading list. Here was the original story from the Cleburne Times-Review of Feb 5, 2009.

After objections over the book’s sex scenes from at least one community member, “Pillars of the Earth” was removed from the reading list by Superintendent Dr. Ronny Beard.

Cleburne High Principal Monte Pritchett referred all questions about the book to district spokesperson Lisa Magers, who released a statement from Beard that said, “The district is researching the issue. We will follow what board policy dictates in determining what action we need to take.”

Here's an example of a letter to the editor from the Cleburne paper

I am appalled that the Cleburne ISD deliberately works against our efforts by requiring — even offering — a book like “Pillars of the Earth.”

Having read a few excerpts from the book, I can honestly say it is the vilest, most de-grading, and filthy material I have ever read.

I can think of no possible way “Pillars of the Earth” or any book of its caliber could have a positive, uplifting effect upon anyone much less students who are still in their formative years.

And some of the people against the book didn't know they were breaking federal law by putting their crap into postboxes.

From KERA-Book Banners Never Win

anyway, I was watching tv in the last 24 hours with some news and I could swear one of the news items was about how Cleburne ISD is going to continue to offer Pillars of the Earth, with permission slips. I can't find the article anywhere, anyone know?

Update: Found another article from the Cleburne paper that says that same group is going to appeal the decision.

The reconsideration committee voted recently to allow the book to be used on a summer reading list in the course.

“This book should remain as an instructional resource but should only be used under the following conditions,” the committee said. “Parent consent is required for a student to read the book for a course. Parent permission forms should have three choices: Yes, my child can read the book; No, my child cannot read the book; I will allow my child to decide. Parent permission forms should be mailed to parents. One objectionable passage and one nonobjectionable passage should be included in the letter home to parents.”

The Level II appeal of the committee’s decision was filed by members of Concerned Parents & Citizens, who originally challenged the book’s inclusion in the curriculum.

3 - David   26 Mar 2009 @ 6:51:38 PM  Read any of Ken Follett's books and you'll find an author that rolls history into a story. It's stupid to think that young readers "can't handle" or should not be permitted to read what I consider not only classic but historical novels. I have a twelve year old granddaughter and if she wanted to read it I'd say she would enjoy it tremendously. CONSIDERING THE GRAPHIC SEXUAL CRAP THAT IS ON TV THESE DAYS THIS BOOK IS NOT ONLY GREAT BUT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A MUST READ FOR ALL. FOR THOSE WHO OPPOSE IT, GET REAL. THE WORLD IS ALIVE, NOT HIDDEN IN THE CLOSET COVERING IT'S EYE'S AND EARS.

4 - Ryan, chs student   27 Mar 2009 @ 2:17:03 PM  This was the best book I've yet to read and think it would be a shame not to keep it. I also read the sequel on my own time and would suggest it for anyone who liked the first .

5 - Robert Mayes   30 Mar 2009 @ 11:19:46 PM  This debate is an example of post-modern - everyone makes their own decision about what is truth - or there is no truth - propaganda. I stand upon truth that has not been, nor will ever be defiled by time. "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the SEXUALLY IMMORAL, those who practice magic arts, idolators, and all liars, their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur." The Bible. I will stand boldly against anyone who says we must read debasing literature to make a judgement about it.

No one is suggesting that you be forced to read a particular book, Mr. Mayes, just as no one should be allowed to decide what others may or may not read.
